What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.  

Today, we are an alliance of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and a national office who work in communities across the United States to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI advocates for all who are affected by mental illness, both the individuals and the people in their lives. In particular, we work to address disparities and injustices and to promote dignity and inclusion for all people with mental illness and their families. In addition to being advocates, we educate, we listen, and we lead as evidenced by our public awareness campaigns, the range of numerous programs we provide, and our strong public policy. 

We currently have an opening for a Manager, Institutional Giving. In coordination with the Senior Manager, this individual will work with the Strategic Alliances and Development (SA&D) team to manage the submission, tracking and fulfillment of NAMI’s portfolio of grants. This includes working across teams to develop and write grant proposals and reports for strategic initiatives, as well as coordinating with program teams and finance team leadership to track grant-funded projects, ensure funds are being spent and deliverables are on target for completion.  The Manager will also be responsible for the tracking, organization and processes of the SA&D grants process, including updating Salesforce, maintaining the submission and reports calendar, and identifying synergy and other processes. Additionally, the Manager will support the Senior Manager in communicating updates, needs, and opportunities from other NAMI departments to the SA&D team. 

This position is full-time and may be remote, or on-site in Arlington, VA.    

Salary range:  $65,000 - $75,000 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Manager is responsible for: 

  • Working with the senior manager, directors and CDO to understand and articulate NAMI’s body of work, change strategies, vision, impact and value added in the mental health movement to prospective funders in every sector.
  • Collaborating with program and development staff to develop funding proposals, ensuring compliance with the funders’ guidelines and policies, and alignment with NAMI’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Tracking, documenting and managing grant requirements and deadlines with relevant project teams and NAMI leadership.
  • Tracking progress toward grant deliverables and drafting requisite grant reports in collaboration with project teams and the development lead.
  • Tracking total funds committed/requested and all proposed activities for various NAMI programs and initiatives, and regularly reporting this information to appropriate staff and leadership.
  • Prospecting, researching and vetting new funding opportunities that align with NAMI’s strategic goals. Drafting and submitting Letters of Inquiry when appropriate.
  • Regularly reviewing research related to mental health trends to develop strong need statements and cases for support.
  • Maintaining the accuracy, completeness, integrity, and security of grant-related systems and information.
  • Serving as the point of contact for assigned mid-level grants, including compliance-related inquiries.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2-4 years of nonprofit experience, including direct grants management experience.
  • Experience writing for multiple concurrent projects on strict deadlines and according to specified guidelines.
  • Excellent persuasive writing skills, knowledge of best practices in grant writing and demonstrated ability to distill complex program plans and outcomes into compelling proposal and report narratives.
  • Experience working collaboratively with senior management and program staff to translate technical subject matter knowledge into readable and compelling messages for a general audience.
  • General understanding of nonprofit financial reporting practices, experience creating and tracking budgets preferred.
  • Background in public health or mental health a plus.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce preferred.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times.
  • Strong ability to plan, organize, prioritize work and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to collaboratively work and communicate with diverse audiences, including all levels of employees, management, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills, excellent judgment in problem solving and decision making.
  • Must pass background check.
