Job Purpose Reporting to the Vice President for University
Advancement, the Associate Vice President for Development manages
Winthrop University’s major gift and annual giving operations and
raises financial support for the university’s educational mission
by soliciting individuals and organizations for annual, major and
planned gifts. Job Description Manages a portfolio of donors:
Develops and cultivates relationships with alumni and friends of
the university to solicit regular annual leadership gifts and major
and planned gifts of $25,000 or more for capital needs, special
programs, scholarships and leadership gifts to the annual fund.
Sets short- and long-term goals for the major gifts team and
provides effective leadership and supervision through one-to-one
coaching and effective prospect moves management. Manages the
annual giving team and sets strategic short- and long-term goals
for annual giving campaigns. Collaborates with University
Communications and Marketing and Alumni Relations to develop and
refine aggressive marketing program for annual appeals. Works
closely with advancement services team and stewardship director to
develop strategies for expanding the overall donor portfolio,
increasing donor engagement and promoting special events for giving
societies. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree; at least
seven years of fundraising or related non-profit organizational
work, alumni relations, sales or related field; and five years of
experience in management or team leadership. Preferred
Qualifications Experience in higher education fundraising,
preferably in major and principal gift fundraising and capital
campaigns, and proficiency with Raiser’s Edge or similar
fundraising software. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary
Extensive knowledge of the principles and best practices of
fundraising and capital campaigns. Exceptional verbal and written
communication skills. Lead-by-example management style and
demonstrated ability to empower, build and motivate individual
performance while encouraging effective teamwork. Ability and
willingness to embrace and promote effective change and to seek
program growth and longer-term sustainability through
entrepreneurial risk-taking. Ability to exercise sound judgment in
decision-making . Must possess a high degree of integrity,
political sensitivity, and diplomacy and a proven record of success
in supervision, budgetary oversight and strategic planning.
