Our Story

The Center for Mindful Self-Compassion aims to be the global leader in self-compassion training and to offer the highest quality programs to diverse populations, based upon scientific research and established teaching methods. Established in 2012, CMSC is committed to building an equitable, inclusive, and caring global community, supporting the practice of self-compassion where each person matters and everyone belongs. Our purpose is to alleviate human suffering and to improve the collective well-being of the planet through the practice of self-compassion.

CMSC achieves this mission in several ways including:

  • Providing resources and training opportunities to those wishing to learn and practice self-compassion
  • Disseminating Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and adaptations of MSC in an effective, accessible, flexible, and affordable manner to the widest range of participants
  • Providing quality training and continuing professional support to teachers of CMSC programs
  • Supporting and extending diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all activities of the organization and to our partners throughout the world
  • Fostering a worldwide community of practice to support everyone who wishes to be more self-compassionate


Organizational Culture

Through its work and its partnerships, CMSC is committed to bringing critical, effective and accessible self-compassion practices to the world. The founders, Christopher Germer and Kristin Neff, are international leaders in this space and a tremendous asset to the organization as it continues to grow its vision. The organization, which runs completely virtually, now has a budget of over $2 million, a professional board, and a cooperative and collaborative team of 11 core staff, who work on the ground and partner with close to 100 outside contractors and educators around the globe. CMSC is determined to be an inclusive, caring, multi-cultural community, based on mindfulness and self-compassion that respects and allows each individual to thrive.


Benefits and Features

  • Salary: $130,00-150,000, based on experience and location
  • Location: This role is 100% remote.

Position Overview

The new Executive Director will have the opportunity to work in partnership with a committed and engaged Board to lead an organization towards its next phase of success. With strong financials, a history of achievement, high respect in the field, and effective and proven programs, CMSC is preparing for a new phase of strategic planning, revenue building and focused growth. The person stepping into this role will have the exciting opportunity to build off of this solid foundation as they shape the future of the organization and take it to its next level of impact.



Areas of Responsibility

 Leadership and Organizational Development

  • Working with the board of directors, lead and implement strategic planning efforts to identify areas of growth, new initiatives to incubate, new audiences to engage, and strategies to increase integration and collaboration within the organization. Develop strategic outcome measures and report on them regularly.
  • Deepen and clarify current partnerships and relationships, and establish new and creative ones to drive scaling and expansion of work.
  • Strengthen CMCS’s global network, building impact through its own work and by clarifying and supporting the work of teachers and partners around the world.
  • Build organizational capacity and awareness around DEIB, and enhance the integration of DEIB throughout CMSC and its programs.
  • Effectively manage a core executive team while creating a culture of trust, continuous feedback and communication with all staff. Delegate appropriately. Have hard conversations that will allow staff to challenge themselves, grow, and thrive.
  • Ensure a close, effective working relationship with the Board of Directors and CMSC founders. Keep the board fully informed on emerging and appropriate issues that impact the effectiveness, viability and credibility of the organization. Partner with the Board President to create opportunities for Board Members to participate in meaningful and impactful ways.
  • Ensure accurate and timely budgets and financial statements, analyze reports and share information regularly with staff, Finance Committee and Board.
  • Facilitate change management processes, gathering input as appropriate while aligning and refining streams of work, tools, processes, and program functions.


Fundraising, Marketing and Partnerships

  • Building on recent fundraising efforts and meaningful relationships already in place, establish and execute a fundraising strategy to develop and diversify non-fee-for-service funding streams.
  • Build a culture of philanthropy with the Board of Directors, working with the Board President to increase engagement in fundraising activities.
  • Oversee marketing staff and efforts, ensuring accurate, clear, impactful and mission-aligned external communication.
  • Act as a primary, global CMSC advocate and spokesperson around issues relevant to CMSC, its mission and vision, programs and constituencies.
  • Establish new business development plans that bring new audiences, partners and support into the organization.


Background Profile

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to envision the future, create strategic plans, establish success metrics, and inspire the team to achieve them. Proven ability to effectively execute on strategies.
  • Nonprofit management/leadership experience preferred, including an understanding of nonprofit governance, fundraising, and financial models.
  • Strong people management skills, including the ability to teach, mentor, motivate and hold accountable staff in a virtual setting.
  • Relationship builder with a high EQ. Demonstrated ability to relate to people from various cultures, backgrounds, and belief systems. Ability to create global connections.
  • Adaptive executive leader that can work effectively with different styles and personalities and be nimble and agile in responding to emergent needs.
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to tell the story of the CMSC to varied audiences in an engaging and compelling way.
  • Strong fundraising knowledge and skills, ability to build and execute on revenue-generating strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Boards of Directors.
  • Ability to analyze and discuss nonprofit budgets and financial statements.
  • Digital marketing experience and/or understanding.
  • Experience with interpreting and/or setting contract terms and structures.
  • Tech savvy – understands various systems and platforms.
