Associate Consultant

About the Firm

Social Strategy Associates LLC is an inspired consultancy, passionate about the power of philanthropy and business to positively impact our world's most pressing social and environmental issues. We work with leading foundations, corporations, and nonprofits to design, implement, and manage strategic philanthropy and social responsibility programs. As a distributed team with roots in New York City, we serve clients across the country.

We are advisors, facilitators and strategists with the goal of expanding our clients’ capacity to deliver great philanthropy. Our approach is highly collaborative, innovative and results-driven. You can learn more about our service offerings in our firm’s capabilities deck.

Current client projects focus on a diverse array of issue areas, including social innovation, early childhood development, equitable economic recovery, and labor and worker rights.

Across all our work, we prioritize equity and diversity of backgrounds, thought, and experiences. We strive to support organizations that work not just for but with impacted communities and center their voices and leadership.

About this Role

We are excited to expand our small but mighty team by bringing on a new full-time teammate. The Associate Consultant will support client accounts by producing detailed deliverables, preparing for and contributing to client meetings, conducting research and analysis, responding to client communications, and all other facets of efficiently and effectively shepherding social impact work forward and delighting clients while doing so. The ideal candidate will be able to seamlessly toggle between 30,000-foot strategy and in-the-weeds details, and between accounts.

The Associate Consultant should be passionate about work that centers underserved and overlooked communities and have experience bringing a justice lens to the work. He/she/they will have the innate drive to run the ball down the field as far as one can, but the emotional maturity to know when it makes sense to check in internally with a teammate. We pride ourselves on having a collaborative and all-hands-on-deck work culture – that is, from developing high-level strategy to printing out name tags the morning of a public event, all team members work together to get the job done.

The position was previously based out of a beautiful client office in the Flatiron neighborhood of New York City. However, over these last two years our team has transitioned to primarily remote work. Core U.S.-based team members are now located in New York City, Palm Springs, CA and Bozeman, MT. Given our current comfort with remote work, we are excited to hear from qualified applicants across the U.S. with willingness to travel; we still value the opportunity to come together to co-work on location.

Responsibilities include:

Actively support project leads in the day-to-day of managing client accounts, which includes preparing detailed agendas, quickly and accurately responding to client requests, taking detailed notes during client meetings, scheduling meetings with internal and external parties, and other operational and administrative tasks. Prepare and present client deliverables (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, research reports, Excel workbooks), inclusive of the research, analysis, and administrative tasks that contribute to these deliverables. Share responsibility for account budgets and timelines. Build the capacity of a young firm, from editing proposals to enhancing internal processes to representing the firm at external functions. Actively engage in internal brainstorms and external meetings to provide input on ongoing projects.

A qualified applicant will:

BA or BS degree in a related field. Have two years of management consulting, program management, or similar experience in a detail-oriented, professional setting. Possess advanced skills in PowerPoint, Excel, and Word; knowledge of Google Workspace, Foundant, SurveyMonkey, Doodle, WordPress and Constant Contact is also desirable. Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as possess outstanding interpersonal skills. To be clear, strong writing skills are absolutely critical. Demonstrate superior analytical and organizational skills, including attention to detail and a commitment to rigor. Demonstrate strong critical thinking skills in answering research questions using existing frameworks or by creating new ones. Be a smart generalist and self starter possessing high levels of independence and intrinsic motivation. Be a positive individual who maintains composure under pressure and when receiving direct feedback from colleagues and clients. Be comfortable working in a constantly evolving small business environment. Be entrepreneurial. Have a willingness to travel; travel requirements vary by client. Have experience working in, or substantial interest in, the social impact space. Current SSA accounts focus on a diverse range of social impact topics, including social and environmental innovation, early childhood development, equitable economic recovery, and labor and worker rights.

The starting salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Numerous benefits are provided, including a $450 per month health expense reimbursement through a QSEHRA plan, a company-issued laptop, opportunities for in-person onboarding and client travel, immediate exposure to philanthropic and nonprofit leaders, and bespoke professional development opportunities. The firm offers 13 paid holidays and 15 additional days of paid time off.
