This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, which includes a combination of onsite and remote work.

 

DESCRIPTION

The Director, Alumni Relations plans, develops, and implements strategies for alumni-specific programs, events, and activities. Works within policies that are complex or possibly sensitive in nature. Manages and evaluates alumni engagement programs that advance the mission and goals of UC San Diego Alumni and the academic area they are assigned to. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Alumni Outreach and Engagement and works collaboratively with the Deans, development officers, Alumni Relations colleagues, and Advancement partners.

 

The Director is responsible for cultivating affinity among alumni by creating effective communication tools to engage alumni and encourage participation in programs and initiatives. The Director works closely to facilitate connections between alumni and current students to provide mentoring opportunities. The Director will be the strategic liaison and representative between the academic areas and alumni, sharing engagement opportunities which include, but are not limited to: career advising, career development and mentoring programs, student engagement, global engagement and industry engagement.

 

The Director will engage the alumni community in initiatives and programs defined by Alumni and Community Engagement (ACE) and the academic areas. Manages the information and data pertaining to alumni engagement, areas of interest and expertise, and general contact. Develops annual unit plans that represent ACE strategies and priorities in collaboration with academic area strategies and priorities. The incumbent fosters strong working relationships with Advancement and other campus partners to advance alumni engagement, by involving alumni in opportunities representing their areas of interest and expertise (mentoring, regional clubs, athletics, speaking at programs, volunteer programs, etc.). The incumbent will provide input for the creation and dissemination of relevant and timely communication in collaboration with the Marketing and Communication colleagues in Alumni and Community Engagement in order to share news and promote programs and events. The incumbent will also be responsible for the qualification of prospects and donor management within their assigned portfolio. Collaboration between the Director and Career Center colleagues will be vital to create career referrals and alumni professional and career development opportunities.

 

Directors of Alumni Relations will work for alumni-specific programs and are assigned a specific area of focus. This position will support the Schools of Pharmacy, Public Health, and Medicine in Health Sciences.

 

• Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from college with a major in business administration, economics, statistics, political science, educational administration, or an allied field, or an equivalent combination of experience/training. Advanced knowledge of assigned area of responsibility, for example, the campus scientific community.

• Proven success as an engagement officer in a highly sophisticated engagement-centered environment. Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and alumni.

• Proven experience in and knowledge of the full spectrum of development including: solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, high level boards, volunteer groups and administration.

• Advanced knowledge of practices and procedures associated with building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of alumni, internal and external constituencies. Ability to establish professional working relationships and interact effectively with diverse groups having competing interests and priorities within the university and community.

• Advanced knowledge of issues of concern in higher education. Proven ability to negotiate and to exchange ideas, information and opinions to make joint decisions, conclusions or solutions.

• Demonstrated working knowledge of the administrative structure and academic programs of a major university, with knowledge of alumni relations industry and trends.

• Advanced project management skills, including skills to plan and implement successful events. Proven success in initiating, planning, and strategically implementing cultivation opportunities through engagement. Knowledge of the principles and practices of developing and utilizing volunteer leadership and organizing and maintaining volunteer support organizations.

• Creative ability to conceptualize, develop and implement programmatic activities from only very general guidelines.

• Demonstrated skill in researching and evaluating information, preparing concise, well-organized reports, summaries, correspondence, policy documents and personalized letters.

• Demonstrated experience with and ability to develop and use computer applications and capabilities to produce correspondence, reports and tools for analysis and review, i.e., Word, Excel, Access.

• Active listening skills, including advanced critical thinking and analytical skills. Proven ability to provide critical analysis, using sound judgment with realistic expectations for alumni prospects and donors. Skill to recognize potential areas of constituency concern and address, resolve and/or mitigate problems or issues.

• Proven ability to work with a high level of independence and prioritize assignments and departmental needs to meet deadlines. Demonstrated strong managerial, leadership, and communication skills.

• Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to produce information that is appropriately presented and effectively received by target constituencies. Ability to represent Alumni and Community Engagement on task forces and committees and to participate in meetings and conferences involving senior university officials and volunteer leaders.
