FULL-TIME JOB VACANCY
MANAGER
Development and Outreach Department
Los Angeles Office
Application Deadline: November 30, 2022

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a Manager to focus on fundraising and outreach events and initiatives in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. In collaboration with the Development and Outreach Team in Los Angeles, the manager will participate actively in the local fundraising strategy by developing and maintaining a portfolio of supporters and enhancing both internal and external communication. This full-time position will be based in our Los Angeles office and will report to the Southern California Director in the Development and Outreach Department. We anticipate that the successful candidate will begin this position in late-January to early-February 2023.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate, but will be expected to work from the Los Angeles office at least 2 to 3 days per week. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Work in partnership with the Southern California Director on the fundraising strategy for Los Angeles and its implementation;

2. Manage the production and logistics of fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events in Los Angeles, including HRW’s annual Voices for Justice celebration, researcher briefings, film screenings, advocacy, cultivation events, conferences, and privately hosted dinners;

3. Manage communications with the Los Angeles Committee and community including programmatic updates and targeted outreach;

4. Coordinate select initiatives and help to manage Committee interest groups, and sub-Committees;

5. Collaborate with the Los Angeles team to build the base of support for the organization by researching, identifying, cultivating, and soliciting philanthropic commitments and general support funds from current supporters and prospective donors. Identify areas of interest for our community with regards to HRW’s work so that the Development & Outreach department can adopt a proactive and strategic approach to events;

6. Support the production of the Santa Barbara Voices for Justice annual event;

7. Present the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;

8. Help in creating and regularly monitoring a budget;

9. Create agendas, prepare background materials, and conduct follow-up to meetings;

10. Supervise support staff, interns and volunteers, as required;

11. Deliver output in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development and Outreach department; and

12. Perform other tasks, as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, or related studies is required. An advanced degree in one of those fields is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years of donor or volunteer management, philanthropy or fundraising experience and demonstrated success in managing large-scale events is required.

We are eager to hear from candidates who can perform the essential functions of this role even if they do not meet all of our desired qualifications – particularly if they are from backgrounds underrepresented in the fundraising or NGO sectors.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Demonstrated commitment to human rights issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are required.

2. Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.

3. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.

4. Ability to effectively build donor and volunteer relationships is required.

5. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required. Track record of effective teamwork is highly desirable.

6. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work well under pressure are required.

7. Strong computer skills are required. Experience with Salesforce, CRM software and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.

Other: Occasional night and weekend work to support events is required.
