BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school. Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses. As students journey through high school and continue to grow their businesses, BUILD helps them explore college and career options, and assists students with the college application process. Entrepreneurship is the spark – college, career, and life success are the goals.

Position Summary:
The Director of Philanthropy (DOP) will be responsible for leading, designing and implementing the BUILD Metro DC region’s annual and long-range strategy for securing gifts from a variety of sources, including foundations, corporations, individuals, and from events. With a regional annual goal of $850,000, the DOP will build relationships with new donors, and cultivate relationships with existing donors, to raise the budget needed to serve Washington, D.C. teachers and students.
The Director of Philanthropy is part of the DC executive team and will play an integral role in putting systems in place, forging new relationships, and building a pipeline of new donors, foundations, and corporate partners. This position requires a high-level of drive and passion for our work, the ability to lead with kindness and thoughtfulness, and the ability to operate in a high-energy, entrepreneurial environment where innovation and creativity are valued and expected.
This position will report to the Metro DC Regional Executive Director (RED).
Position Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the RED, raise
the BUILD Metro DC operating budget and reserve of $850,000 for
Fiscal Year 23, $925,000 for Fiscal Year 24, and $1MM+ for Fiscal
Year 25.
Manage all aspects of the development
program, including annual giving, major gifts and grants.
Build a portfolio of donors through
numerous sources and be responsible for developing strategies and
outreach to these donors.
Collaborate internally on special
projects and provide leadership on cross-functional teams.
Strategy and Planning
-
Refine and improve the multi-year
development Fund Development Plan to meet and exceed annual and
long-term fundraising objectives covering all aspects of
development.
In support of the Regional Executive
Director, lead the engagement of BUILD Metro DC’s Local Advisory
Board to raise major gifts ($10,000+) from individuals,
corporations and foundations. Support the RED’s efforts to grow the
Board from 14 to 25 members over the next three years.
Strategically leverage the time of
the Metro DC RED and other senior leaders to support data-driven
fundraising goals.
Collaborate internally on special
projects and provide leadership on cross-functional Program Teams
for fundraising activities and site visits that involve BUILD
students.
Collaborate with the RED in the
strategic advancement of the organization by organizing, planning,
and assisting in the focus, preparation, and completion of all
donor meetings, including preparation and follow-up.
Corporate and Foundation Relationship Management

Set and implement the strategy to
identify, secure, cultivate, and/or maintain corporate partnerships
that yield:

Funding sources
Sustainable pipelines of
volunteers
In-kind donations (i.e. office
supplies or food)
Event space
Donor and Board Cultivation

Oversee planning and execution of
cultivation/recognition events and activities in collaboration with
the Development Team.
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and
steward a portfolio of high-level major gift prospects; and assist
in the focus, preparation, execution, and follow–up for all donor
meetings
Candidate Requirements:
-
Bachelor’s Degree required.
At least 8-10 years of related
experience with demonstrated success in cultivating, soliciting and
closing gifts from a variety of constituents.
Prior experience designing and
implementing comprehensive fundraising plans for all funding
streams including individuals, corporate, foundation, events, and
annual giving.
Strong familiarity with the
philanthropic and broader donor community in the Metro DC
area.
Strong commitment to youth and
education.
Must be persuasive and know how to
build a case for philanthropic support.
Should be flexible and able to adapt
easily to changing situations as they arise.
Successful experience working with
volunteer leaders and program staff to ensure an integrated,
organized effort, as well as goal oriented
accomplishments.
Knowledge of Raisers Edge
required.

Position Details:

Full Time/Exempt
Location: Must be within the Metro DC
area. This role works largely in a hybrid capacity but external
meetings and events require travel within the Metro DC and
surrounding areas

the year for staff retreats and meetings
Compensation:
The salary for Director of Philanthropy ranges from $95-100k in accordance with BUILD’s equity focused salary bands. BUILD offers a competitive benefits package for eligible employees.
