The assistant director of Next Generation Philanthropy (NGP) reports to the director of NGP and is responsible for relaunching and rebranding the Young Alumni for Duke program—class-based volunteer committees focused on increasing participation in giving from undergraduate alumni in the 9 youngest classes—and for managing the 5th reunion gift campaign and fundraising volunteers.

Next Generation Philanthropy is focused on cultivating and growing Duke’s next generation of undergraduate alumni leaders—donors and volunteers.  Next generation alumni include alumni 15 years post-graduation, totaling nearly 26,000 and comprises the university’s largest undergraduate opportunity group for engagement, annual giving participation and long-term leadership giving and volunteerism. In collaboration with stakeholders in Alumni Engagement and Development (AED) and across campus, the NGP team, under the direction of the director of NGP, is responsible for helping create the vision for the next generation philanthropy program and executing the program to meet ambitious dollar and participation goals.

The assistant director will identify, recruit, train, and manage Young Alumni for Duke and 5th Reunion Giving volunteers who engage in peer-to-peer outreach focused on solicitation and stewardship of classmates.  S/he will also travel nationally to solicit donors, recruit and manage volunteers and staff events.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Young Alumni for Duke Program

  • Rebrand and Relaunch Duke’s Young Alumni for Duke program.
  • Develop and execute a strategic plan to secure philanthropic participation-level gifts from Duke’s youngest undergraduate alumni with the goal of stabilizing participation rates from this important population.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and manage undergraduate alumni volunteers from the first nine years after graduation to conduct peer outreach education and engage in personal solicitation to increase Annual Fund participation.
  • Work closely with the director of Phonathon and Student Giving to ensure proper transition of student leaders into NGP leaders and YAFD volunteers.
  • Collaborate with members of the Duke Parents Program to ensure children of Parents Committee are tapped for engagement in YAFD program and are cultivated and solicited.
  • Partner with members of the AF Communications Team to develop and implement a multi-channel communications plan for educating and soliciting this constituency.
  • Manage consistent and strategic cultivation, solicitation stewardship initiatives for hundreds of YAFD members so that they feel engaged and well informed. This group will be cultivated and trained to be the next generation of leaders and donors for Duke.
  • Activate YAFD members as volunteers throughout each fiscal year with focus on peer-driven outreach for solicitation and stewardship including nightly calling campaigns around Giving Tuesday and LDOC.
  • Solicit current YAFD members as needed, (e.g. monthly anniversary reminders)
  • In partnership with the director of NGP, Special Events, On-campus Engagement and Regional Engagement teams, plan and help execute, and attend meaningful virtual, regional and on-campus events for YAFD members and prospects.
  • Maintain and provide accurate statistics and reporting for young alumni that will contribute to annual operating plans and yearly analyses.
  • Serve as staff backup for Young Alumni Development Council program, assisting the director of NGP as needed.

 

Manage 5th Reunion Class Campaign and Fundraising Volunteers

  • Utilizing data from previous student and young alumni programs and prospect analytics, partner with the Reunion Experience staff liaison to identify reunion class co-chairs (10-20) and reunion class gift team (40-60 per class).
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training and managing reunion volunteers—with specific focus on volunteers interested in working on the Reunion Class Gift campaign; and solicit for Annual Fund gifts where appropriate.
  • Set and achieve ambitious, yet realistic reunion fundraising goals for the 5th reunion class. Using previous class giving history and detailed prospect analysis, determine dollar and donor goals.
  • Assist with developing presentations and toolkits to train volunteers who engage in peer-education and solicitation and take an active role in developing motivational strategies to enhance the volunteer experience.
  • Partner on volunteer trainings via WebEx and monthly conference calls with reunion co-chairs.
  • Using volunteer preference and prospect analytics, assign classmates to reunion volunteers for peer-to-peer solicitation with focus on leadership Annual Fund gifts.
  • Partner with the Reunion Experience staff liaison on Reunion virtual, regional and on-campus programming, volunteer management, and communications messaging and marketing.
  • Maintain on-going communication with volunteers and Duke staff regarding class progress toward fundraising goals.

Qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward NGP and 5th Reunion alumni

  • Travel 6 times per year to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of leadership Annual Fund prospects focusing on undergraduate reunion and inter-reunion alumni and non-alumni parents.
  • Meet with and develop relationships with Duke prospects (described above) to personally qualify their financial capacity and inclination to make leadership Annual Fund gifts to Duke. Diplomatically ask qualifying questions to distinguish between prospects and suspects.
  • Solicit prospects for gifts to the Annual Fund with focus on securing multi-year pledges in the five and six figure range and $5K+ single year gifts from inter-reunion alumni and non-alumni parents.
  • Organize and staff Pre-reunion and Inter-reunion events in key cities to engage, recruit, solicit, and steward alumni.
  • Develop initial strategies for on-going involvement including appropriate referrals to fundraising colleagues in AED and across Duke.
  • Provide timely post-visit follow-up including tracking moves and solicitations in donor tracking program (DADD), sending personalized follow up to individual prospects, and making referrals to AED and campus-wide gift officers as appropriate.

Serve as an active member of the Duke Annual Fund staff:

  • Maintain and provide accurate statistics and reporting that will contribute to annual operating plans and yearly analyses for the NGP and Reunion teams.
  • Attend and participate in a variety of Annual Fund events (e.g. Annual Fund Advisory Board meetings, Reunion Weekend activities, NGP events, student philanthropic education events, etc.).

Additional Requirements / Skills

  • Ability to travel regularly and to work on weekends and evenings.
  • Strong initiative, high energy level, creativity, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, working both independently and as a team member.
  • Previous experience with managing volunteers preferred.
  • Knowledge of Duke University preferred.

 

 

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires one year of experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fund raising, sales and promotions, marketing, student activities or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer and coordinate annual fund solicitations and other special fund raising activities. A bachelor's degree from Duke University may be substituted for the required year of experience since the familiarity with the University and contacts with current students and recent graduates would be directly relevant to the job.
