POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Development Manager of Family Foundations and Special Gifts (Development Manager) is responsible for maintaining a portfolio of approximately 50 family foundation donors and prospects who are making or who are capable of making grants in support of BrightFocus Foundation and its disease research programs. The Development Manager of Family Foundations ensures that grant proposals and follow-up reports are submitted in a timely and comprehensive manner consistent with the requirements of the foundation.  In addition, he/she is responsible for identifying opportunities for grant submissions to new family foundations.

 

The Development Manager of Family Foundations is also responsible for representing, managing, and growing BrightFocus’ participation in the Combined Federal Campaign/State & Local Giving Campaigns.  In addition, this position manages and grows BrightFocus’ ability to secure employer matching gifts through our “Double the Donation” program. And final, the Development Manager works closely with those volunteer donors who self-select to lead third-party personal fundraisers for BrightFocus or one of its programs.

 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Development, and supporting the Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, the success candidate will be welcomed as a member of a dynamic, fast-paced, and supportive team and will be capable of managing multiple projects.  The Development Manager will develop and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with colleagues in the Development and Strategic Partnerships departments and across the Foundation.

 

DUTIES, RESPONSIBLITIES, AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Proactively lead all aspects of creating and submitting 5-6 figure grant proposals, including writing, preparing supportive documentation and presentation materials, timely progress reports, managing deliverables and maintain relationships with foundation principles, before during and after grant cycles for appropriate stewardship.   
  • Submit approximately 40-50 proposals and letters of inquiry annually to family foundations.
  • Work with Scientific Affairs and Public Affairs to craft proposals and budgets to support ongoing research and public awareness activities.
  • Ensure all information related to family foundation donors and prospects is up-to-date in BrightFocus’ data management system, (DMI).
  • Oversee and manage Alzheimer’s Disease Research’s application and participation in the Combined Federal Campaign/State & Local Giving Campaigns and Private Sector Employee Giving campaigns – representing BrightFocus in as many of these CFC events as is effective. (approximately 6-8 held during the fall).
  • Maintain relationships with America’s Charities representatives and submit complete applications for federal, state, local, and private giving campaigns to America’s Charities by their strict deadlines.
  • Supervise a new CFC advertising campaign each year and collaborate with Public Affairs for charity fair giveaways, new social media content, digital and print imaging, and blog post.
  • Working closely with the direct response staff, manage and grow the fundraising revenue generated thought “Double the Donation,” BFF’s current employer matching gift program, including implementation, integration, communication schedule, etc.
  • Support volunteers who are planning and implementing third-party personal fundraisers on behalf of BrightFocus or one of its programs, serving as their point of contact with BFF - providing them with marketing materials, shipping public awareness publications, producing acknowledgements, and cultivation and stewardship of individuals pre- and post-event.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as assigned.

  • Highly collaborative, with the ability to work well with and support colleagues, demonstrating respect and appreciation, and securing their involvement in achieving project goals.
  • Understands and values established protocols and confidentiality associated with donor engagement.
  • Has the ability to quickly zero-in on relevant details and is capable of explaining complicated issues in a comprehensible fashion.
  • Maintains a balanced, positive outlook, demonstrates decorum when dealing with stakeholders, receives constructive feedback without getting defensive, and exhibits an appropriate sense of humor.
  • Wants to be successful in the work they have undertaken and to that end exhibits an appropriate level of ownership and responsibility for getting the job done well.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility may be substituted for the academic degree requirement.  
  • A minimum of 6-8 years of a proven track record of fundraising success.   
  • Excellent organizational, planning, tracking and follow-through skills, including time management to meet deadlines and attention to detail
  • Willingness to travel and work weekends as needed.
