POSITION PURPOSE
The School of Nursing is dedicated to educating the next generation
of nurse leaders, advancing nursing science and improving the
health of communities locally, regionally and globally. The
Assistant Dean for Advancement develops and oversees the
implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising and
alumni/constituent relations. This includes creating programs,
activities and initiatives that attract private support,
volunteerism and engages alumni and friends on behalf of the
school. The Assistant Dean for Advancement works closely with the
School of Nursing team and UW’s Office of Advancement to lead and
drive support for a comprehensive fundraising program including
Corporate and Foundation relations, Major Giving, Planned Giving
and Annual Giving, The Assistant Dean for Advancement reports
jointly to the Dean of the School of Nursing and the Vice President
for Development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Frontline Fundraising
Focus the school’s advancement related activities, including
corporate and foundation relations, on securing major gifts
($100,000 and above).
Manage a portfolio of individual major gift prospects and develop
and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for each
assigned prospect.
Oversee the management of the school’s portfolio of corporate
prospects and develop and implement cultivation and solicitation
strategies for each organization. Oversee the development of
volunteer engagement strategies for corporate partnerships, as
appropriate.
Oversee the management of the school’s foundation relations
program. The Advancement team will collaborate with the Office of
Nursing Research and Advancement central Office of Corporate and
Foundation Relations to support faculty on grant identification.
Collaborate with faculty, administration, and advancement staff to
review and consult on letters of inquiry, proposals, and other
materials that garner foundation support.
Coordinate Nursing’s Advancement efforts with the overall
Advancement efforts in alignment with the university’s mission and
goals. Prepare briefings and support for all leadership and
principal gift donor contacts.
Provide strategy and counsel to the Dean and members of Senior
Administration to mutually plan and share information enhancing
efforts to identify, engage, solicit and/or steward major donors,
SON Advisory Board Members, friends, alumni, community and
corporate leaders.
Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment
agreements and other materials needed to secure major gifts.
Participate cooperatively in the University’s prospect management
and tracking system.
Leadership and Team management
Provide leadership of and oversee the day-to-day operations for the
School of Nursing Advancement Team.
Manage a team of professionals who will build strong and mutually
beneficial relationships between the school (its Dean, faculty and
staff) and external audiences such as donors, volunteers, alumni,
business and community leaders, and select foundations.
Create and manage the budget of the School of Nursing Advancement
Team with discretionary authority.
Responsible for management, staff development and career enrichment
for the School of Nursing Advancement team.
In collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Marketing and
Communications, provide strategic direction for creation of a
communication plan that will promote the objectives of the College.
Coordinate College outreach efforts to significant external
constituencies
Strategy Development
As part of the University-wide Advancement planning process, and in
concert with the Dean of the School of Nursing and VP for
Development, establish both long-term and short-term fundraising
strategies for the school’s overall Advancement activities.
This includes annual gifts, major and planned gifts, corporate and
foundation gifts, donor recognition, and stewardship. Create
strategies and direct the external outreach activities of the
school with an aim of building and significantly expanding the
school’s relationships with external constituents, including
donors, volunteers, future and past students, the professional
community, and policy makers.
Regularly evaluate fundraising programs, assess progress toward
goals, and report on results to the Dean and Vice President for
Development.
Facilitate and manage partnerships and shared resources with
central advancement in support of programs and strategies for
securing private support for the school.
Program Development and Management
Direct and implement the School of Nursing’s advancement programs,
including annual gifts, major and planned gifts, corporate and
foundation gifts, donor recognition, and stewardship. Create
strategies and direct the external outreach activities of the
school with an aim of building and significantly expanding the
school’s base of fundraising constituents.
Coordinate advancement activities throughout the school with
central development programs and services. Work in partnership with
the central development manager of these programs, sharing
information and jointly developing strategies for securing private
support.
In collaboration with the school’s marketing and communications
team, provide strategic direction for creation of a communication
plan that will promote the fundraising and advancement objectives
of the school. Collaborate on the School’s advancement outreach
efforts to significant external audiences and constituencies.
Prepare budgets, forecasts and manage finances within the
Advancement unit. Prepare and present quarterly and annual
financial reports outlining trends, fundraising progress and gifts
by type or source of funds to the Deans and Chairs (Senior
Executive/Management Team).
Volunteer Engagement
In support of direct fundraising, provide strategy, counsel,
staffing to the School’s Advisory Board and participate in related
committees with respect to advancement functions. Build strong and
mutually beneficial relationships between the school (Dean, faculty
and staff) and external audiences.
Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Exercised
This position supervises three budgeted positions, allocated as
mutually determined between the School and University
Advancement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor's degree and at least seven years of progressively
responsible experience in institutional development/advancement,
with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum
qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a
license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to understand schools’ key priorities and balance the Dean
and faculty priorities-discerning the ways in which they present
Advancement opportunities and identifying sources of support that
direct giving to the School’s key objectives.
Proven track record partnering with Dean, ED, or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to improve organizational effectiveness and
results by providing strategic positioning, direction, and
leadership.
Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with
Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special
reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Fundraising experience at a comprehensive research university or
health-care institution. Demonstrated success at major gift
fundraising and working knowledge of gift planning vehicles
(charitable trusts, gift annuities and complex outright
gifts).
Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain corporate and
foundation contacts.
Demonstrated experience working with volunteers and not-for-profit
boards, proactively identifying opportunities to engage volunteers
as ambassadors and stakeholders and supporting their work.
Strong personnel and budget management experience or ability.
Self-motivation with enormous energy and a capacity for hard work
within an intensely goal-oriented environment.
Superior interpersonal skills, working equally comfortably and
effectively with scholars, administration, professional and
administrative staff, and alumni(ae).
Knowledge of alumni relations/development/advancement
principles.
Certified Fundraising Executive or master’s degree.
The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced leader
with a demonstrated track record as a successful fund-raiser,
preferably in higher education, with management, operational,
direct major gift fundraising and volunteer management
experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short
or limited notice.
Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and
willing to travel when necessary.
Frequent local travel expected.
