Dedicated to ending the cycle of domestic and sexual violence, InterAct saves lives, rebuilds lives, and secures safer futures for victims and survivors, and their families. InterAct operates 3 programs 24/7/365: crisis lines, emergency shelter, and the Solace Center, a community-based sexual assault forensic examination center. Our free and confidential wrap-around services include physical and mental health referrals, group and individual counseling, children’s services, case management, rapid rehousing, court and hospital advocacy, and violence prevention education and outreach. Our goal is to help stabilize individuals and families in times of crisis, and to help them continue to build safe, self-sufficient lives. Annually, InterAct reaches over 7,000 direct victims and their children.

 

The Position | Chief Development Officer

 

The Chief Development Officer is responsible for leading InterAct’s resource development program and implementing and evaluating strategic and tactical resource development plans as adopted by the Board of Directors to support for InterAct’s short- and long-term needs. S/he must be a motivated professional and effective communicator with the ability to champion and share the values, mission, services, and impact of InterAct with members of the public and organizational stakeholders.  Specifically, the person in this position is responsible for increasing revenue from a diversity of sources to include public support, private support and foundations and government grants to address the growing needs and demand for InterAct’s critical services in Wake County, NC. This individual will report to the Executive Director, serve as part of the senior leadership team, directly supervise development staff, volunteer services and outreach services, and work closely with board members to increase participation and engagement in resource development programs and initiatives, resulting in sustainable revenue growth.

 

Duties and Areas of Responsibilities

 

Planning and Executing for Financial Sustainability

  • In partnership with the executive director and board, evaluate current public support/contributed income and identify a sustainable revenue model based on sources of revenue with greatest potential for growth.
  • Increase the organization’s resource development capacity, resulting in a broadening of the organization’s base of support, diversification of revenue streams, and an increase in targeted revenue streams including major gift donors and planned giving.
  • Creates specific, measurable, and timed public support/contributed fundraising goals in the context of a broader fundraising plan and tracks progress on goals working closely with the executive director.
  • Design and implement all fundraising plans for annual giving, capital giving, planned giving, special events and projects, and all other solicitations for public support/contributed income.

 

Development Infrastructure

  • Lead development team, and monitor and report on team’s progress weekly, monthly, and annually to ensure that all financial goals are achieved.
  • Maintain a depth of knowledge of current and best practices, policies, guidelines and procedures related to fund development activities, and ensure that all development office conduct, activities, systems, and procedures strictly adhere to the highest ethical, accounting, reporting and other applicable standards.
  • Oversee fund development office systems and procedures to support all fund development projects and operations, including but not limited to the following:
    • Supervision of donor and gift record-keeping
    • Coordination of prospect research activities
    • Oversight of database management and all records, files, and gift processing.
    • Oversight of pledge reminders and acknowledgement processes.

 

Board of Directors and Development Committee

  • Develop and implement fundraising training for Board, Development Committee, and other leadership volunteers, as well as staff.
  • Works closely with the Sustainability Committee on fund development ideas, strategies and implementation.

 

Leadership Team and Cross-Functional Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Leadership Team, responsible for institutional and community relations and relationships; serve as a community liaison and agency representative when indicated; participate in agency operations, and budget planning and management; and work collaboratively to identify programmatic needs and alignment with funding resources.
  • Ensure the identification, recruitment, appropriate training, support, and appreciation of a core group of volunteers to assist in fund development activities, including special events and other fundraising programs as needed.
  • Develop public relations, advertising, marketing and communications strategies, plans, and collateral that support fundraising efforts.
  • Work throughout the agency to create and nurture a “culture of philanthropy” and an awareness that securing the resources necessary to fund the organization is “everybody’s business.”

 

Communications/Marketing, Public Relations, and Advertising

  • Oversee communications/marketing function and outreach function as it relates to resource development.
  • Oversee the production of all fund development-related publications and collateral, including (but not limited to) direct mail campaigns, electronic and print newsletters and other communications, the Annual Report, and website content to support InterAct’s fund- and friend-raising goals and activities.
  • Create and implement communication and promotional plans for campaigns and appeals, including (but not limited to) annual campaigns, as well as special facility or programmatic appeals.

 

Candidate | Requirements & Qualifications

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of five years of professional fundraising experience with increasing levels of responsibility. Proven experience in managing all aspects of fund development programs.
  • Proven and consistent track record of exceeding aggressive fundraising goals required.
  • Knowledge of and experience in goal-driven sales environments preferred leadership-level experience in strategic and tactical planning.
  • Knowledge of financial planning, budget development and analysis in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Must have experience and demonstrated success in major gifts solicitation and grant writing.
  • Previous special events and planned giving experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining professional, productive working relationships with board members, donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
  • Willingness and availability to work a flexible schedule as needed, including nights and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation, and willingness and ability to travel locally.
  • Satisfactory background check, including but not limited to criminal background and driving record screening.

  • Excellent organizational skills, and ability to prioritize duties and multi-task within a complex, fast-paced, rapidly changing work, and funding environment.
  • Computer proficiency, including the Microsoft Office suite, fundraising databases, internet searches, website navigation, and social media.
  • Ability to work effectively with and value people of all backgrounds.
  • Ability to grow and nurture relationships within the community.
  • Familiarity with or commitment to becoming knowledgeable and fluent regarding issues of domestic and sexual violence.
