Director of Development

This position is responsible for planning, implementing, and directing successful fundraising strategies, initiatives and activities at the Stimson Center, under the direction of the President & CEO. The Director will serve as key point person for activities related to institutional business development and fundraising with particular emphasis on cultivating, soliciting, and securing unrestricted major gifts from individuals and corporations. In addition, the successful candidate will supervise the Development staff, and collaborate closely with the Director of Finance, the Director of Strategic Communications, and the Vice President of Research Programs.

DUTIES

  • Under the direction of the President & CEO and the Board of Directors, plans, implements and directs Stimson's fundraising strategies;
  • Creates and directs outreach strategies and maintains ongoing communication with current and prospective donors including foundations, governments, corporations, and individuals;
  • Cultivates engagement and philanthropic giving among Board of Directors together with the President & CEO, and presents reports on development activities at Board meetings;
  • Works with the Board Development Committee Chair to coordinate and set agenda for Committee meetings and provides regular staffing support for Committee activities;
  • Sets strategy for organizational events related to revenue generation including public forums, VIP luncheons, private fundraising dinners, and Board receptions and meetings, among others;
  • Advise senior staff in setting and meeting fundraising goals for each program;
  • Develops print and digital marketing collateral materials related to fundraising in collaboration with the Director of Strategic Communications; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned in keeping with the general nature of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree and 7-10 years of progressively responsible development experience;
  • Demonstrated success in meeting annual fundraising goals and securing major gifts;
  • Previous experience working with high-net-worth individuals and boards of directors;
  • Strong background experience and knowledge of solicitation strategies and development communications;
  • Demonstrated success in securing corporate donations and developing sponsorship models;
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector;
  • Ability to understand, support and communicate the organization's mission and values;
  • Flexible and adaptable style; someone who can positively implement both strategic and tactical fundraising strategies;
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationship with others, both internally and externally to achieve the organization's goals;
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
  • Experience planning and executing events of various sizes and formats;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Strong interest in foreign affairs and/or international peace and security issues; and
  • Grant writing proficiency.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience within the think tank, policy, research, or international security spheres;
  • Familiarity with fundraising platforms such as iWave and Foundation Directory Online;
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms such as Salesforce;
  • Ability to travel on occasion;
  • Experience with capital campaign fundraising.
