Position Summary

The Director of Development will be one of three directors reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) at the Community Foundation Boulder County (CFBC). Two Director positions are currently being recruited as new positions. Directors play a key role in cultivating, managing, and expanding our diverse portfolio of donors. These include Donor-Advised Fund holders, donors to the various funds within the Foundation and other funding partners, such as the Pledge 1% Colorado platform to make giving accessible to any company. Directors are tasked with creating deeper relationships with fund holders and donors to help leverage the knowledge within the work of the Community Foundation to deepen the impact of our various donors in all the ways they aspire. It also includes the opportunity to manage affinity group(s) for greater community engagement, as well as, identifying and engaging new donors and partners to execute the Community Foundation mission and vision. As philanthropic advisors in Boulder County, Directors have a key role in facilitating impact across the County.

These positions are responsible for overall strategy and management of 100-125 donor portfolios. The successful candidate will help deepen relationships with donors to build upon CFBC’s visibility and community influence.

Directors work closely with the six-person philanthropic services team and the entire organization to be a best-in-class community foundation. The CDO is new to the Community Foundation with 20 years in higher education development. We are seeking enthusiastic, innovative, and hard-working professionals dedicated to serving Boulder County with the entrepreneurial spirit this community embodies. We will adjust portfolios of donors and initiatives to the unique interests and experience director candidates bring to the organization demands. These are full‐time, exempt position (100% full‐ time equivalent).

Organizational Evolution:

Over the past two years, Community Foundation Boulder County has stepped up to lead the philanthropic aspects of multiple disaster-recovery efforts, not only collecting millions of dollars in donations but also convening community leaders and deploying resources quickly. Coupled with CFBC’s ongoing efforts to respond to COVID and its impact on Boulder County, CFBC has increased its role as an integral connector between private funding, public actors, and the nonprofit sector. It is now essential that the fundraising and donor relations work of the Foundation expand to meet our critical role in the community as well as exceed donor and fund holder expectations. This is an exciting time to join the team, as the organization grows, creates these new positions, and positions itself to respond to so many incredible opportunities.

Established in 1991, Community Foundation Boulder County currently has assets totaling more than $90 million. In 2021, the foundation received over $15 million in contributions and distributed over $10 million in grants to nonprofit organizations. CFBC has granted more than $120 million to nonprofit organizations since its inception and recently raised over $42 million to support fire recovery efforts in Boulder County.



  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward gifts and pledges from an active portfolio of major gift prospects with ambitious but attainable fundraising goals.

  • Serve as a liaison with attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, and other intermediaries in order to strengthen the foundation’s role as philanthropic partner with professional
  • Provide CFBC with strong, creative, energetic, and strategic leadership on various
  • Actively work with the CEO, CDO and other senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy for the organization.

Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Advanced degree
  • 6+ years’ experience in a nonprofit fundraising role or related
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing relationships over
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the workplace and in
  • Demonstrated success in establishing significant partnerships with the capability of securing five to seven figure commitments.
  • Strong relationships and proven success in networking with community
  • Represent CFBC in the community to increase the organization's visibility and
  • A professional and resourceful style; the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time (without losing a sense of humor).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to engage and influence a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Outgoing, positive personality with very strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with diverse internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight and as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside of CFBC.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising
  • Demonstrates initiative and follow-through and will meet deadlines, pay attention to detail and strong project management skills.
  • High energy and passion for CFBC’s mission is essential, including a commitment to seeking ways to create a more equitable Boulder


These are full-times position or 40 hours a week. The salary range for this position is $65,000 – $90,000, commensurate with experience. CFBC offers a competitive benefits package including health insurance, paid time off, retirement contribution and match, parking pass, and Limited Health Reimbursement Account (employer funding of $2,000 per year).
