Location

Children’s Rights is a national advocacy organization that has, for over 25 years, championed the legal rights of children impacted by government systems. Every day, children are harmed by America’s broken child welfare, juvenile justice, education, immigration, and healthcare systems. These systems disproportionately harm children of color, LGBTQ/TGNC, and other minority youth. Children’s Rights uses civil rights impact litigation, policy expertise, and public education to hold governments accountable for keeping all kids safe and healthy.

Our work tackles a variety of historic and emerging social justice issues impacting children. Recent campaigns have targeted, for example, broken child welfare systems, unconstitutional conditions of confinement in juvenile detention facilities, the failure to provide adequate mental and physical health services to vulnerable children, the unjust treatment of unaccompanied immigrant minors, the pervasive practice of administering powerful and dangerous psychotropic drugs to children in foster care without adequate oversight, the systemic discrimination against Black and LGBTQ youth in custodial settings, and the grave outcomes for older youth “aging” out of government systems. We are keenly aware of the intersectionality that renders specific youth populations even more vulnerable to systemic failures.

Job Summary:

To support its bold mission, Children’s Rights seeks to significantly increase its fundraising revenue, setting ambitious year-over-year revenue and donor acquisition goals. The philanthropy officer will join a development team in “growth mode”; we are simultaneously strengthening event, foundation, and individual fundraising initiatives while launching major donor and corporate giving programs. The primary focus for the incoming officer will be donor acquisition and prospect pipeline development, including engaging current mid-level, major, and corporate donors; assuming responsibility for elements of the digital and mid-level donor program; using the annual gala strategically to engage donors and prospects; and developing donor hubs, particularly outside of New York City. The incoming officer will need to be entrepreneurial, creative, undaunted by setbacks, and committed to a donor-centric fundraising approach. Most importantly, the incoming officer must value being part of a team. The philanthropy officer will report to the chief development officer and will work in partnership with the executive director, board of directors, communications team, and program staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Deepen individual donor and corporate giving relationships by managing a portfolio of donors and prospects and engaging in regular and persuasive outreach using personal visits, written proposals and reports, appeal letters, emails and telephone outreach, and other activities.
  • Build robust donor acquisition and prospect pipelines. Create, execute, and manage quarterly and annual engagement and solicitation plans for each qualified donor in the pipeline.

Draft accurate, informative, and persuasive messaging and materials (solicitations, reports, email updates, etc.). Regularly refresh and customize donor acknowledgments. Develop new donor events and engagement opportunities.

  • Support the fundraising efforts and logistical details of the annual gala. Use the event strategically to solicit and engage donors and prospects.

  • Assist the chief development officer with board member cultivation and fundraising and other fundraising activities and follow-up as needed.

  • Establish strong relationships with program staff to understand Children’s Rights work.

  • Handle logistical details of the digital fundraising program, mid-level donor program, and direct response program, including executing communication and solicitation campaigns, maintaining a detailed timeline/calendar, creating and writing content, and working with colleagues and vendors on printing, processing, and distributing mailings.

  • Maintain accurate records by tracking prospect and donor contact, status, and next steps in the donor relationship management database.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of fundraising experience with at least 2 – 3 years of frontline gift officer experience.
  • Experience with individual giving (direct response, mid-level giving, and major gifts) and proven track record of securing four- and five-figure gifts. Special event experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience with independently managing a portfolio and the ability to build long-term relationships with donors; commitment to donor confidentiality.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, both written and verbal. Must be able to represent Children’s Rights to potential donors and make compelling presentations and requests for support.
  • Must be a self-motivated professional with energy and persistence, willing to be hands-on and able to work independently and as part of a small, collegial team.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and planning skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
  • Must have a high level of computer proficiency in standard business software, including Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). Experience working with fundraising databases is required.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the US (about 25% time) and, if working full-time remotely, to visit the Children’s Rights office in NYC at least every two months.
  • Must be able to work occasional special events (including evenings) as needed and additional hours during peak times as required.
