Position Description:

As an integral member of the College Excellence Program team, the Finance Manager is responsible for creating and managing budgets ($12 million annually), grant accounting, grants management, and other nonprofit financial and administrative operations. The Finance Manager reports to the Director of Strategy & Operations and works in partnership with colleagues across the program.

This is a hybrid, Washington, DC-based position. Selected candidates are expected to work in person at the Washington, DC office approximately two days per week.

Knowledge, Education, and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years experience in a similar, non-profit environment
  • Masters's degree in a finance-related field preferred
  • CPA not required
Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Works with the Director of Strategy & Operations, the senior leadership team, and other program leaders to prepare the annual program budget ($12 million) with attention to forecasting all necessary programmatic details.
  • Acts as the College Excellence Program's liaison to the Institute's accounting department and financial services unit.
  • Monitors and tracks CEP project expenses and revenues and conducts monthly budget reconciliation, including updated budget reports; monitors and tracks CEP general ledger; prepares monthly salary allocations.
  • Collaborates with staff to create and maintain project budgets; train staff to read and understand financial reports and manage programs based on financial data.
  • Produce budgets for grant proposals in collaboration with program leaders and the Director of Strategy & Operations.
  • Monitors the schedule of grant reporting deadlines and coordinates with colleagues to ensure financial reports are prepared, approved, and submitted on time.
  • Monitors cash flow and communicates key information about the College Excellence Program's financial position to leadership on a monthly basis.
  • Manages the program's grant and contract processes, including coordinating consulting contracts and grant agreements, facilitating due diligence reviews, and acting as a liaison with Aspen Institute legal department as needed.
  • Manages sub-granting processes by soliciting and monitoring reports from grantees, updating reporting, and generally overseeing grant management.
  • Oversees and maintains financial records on the program's funders, grantees, and contractors in collaboration with the Aspen Institute accounting department. Work with staff to respond to funder requests for financial information.
  • Ensures compliance with all Aspen Institute policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
