The manager of Membership for Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is part of a 15-person Membership and Development department that is responsible for raising approximately $7+ million in annual operating support from a variety of funding sources. This position reports to the director of Membership. The four-person Membership team raises approximately $2+ million in membership revenue, serves over 21,000 member households, and keeps members connected with BBG, with a goal of increasing net revenue and growth in the membership base. The manager provides direct supervision to the Membership associate and Data Entry and Operations associate.
 

In this high-volume membership office, the manager must possess excellent organizational, communication, and management skills, along with a passion for writing, storytelling, and event planning. This position works closely with the director on data integrity and systems management. The manager also supports fundraising efforts in other areas as needed. 


Primary Responsibilities:

  • With the director, plan and implement multi-channel strategies for the acquisition, renewal, and stewardship of the Garden’s members (21,000+ households), including creating materials that deliver a compelling message about BBG’s mission to members. 

This includes:

  • Produce and manage printed and electronic communications, ensuring timely production and mailing, as well as mission-driven, engaging messages to members. Materials include the biannual Plants & Gardens newsletter, member emails, stewardship emails, event invites, etc. 
  • Coordinate multichannel direct marketing campaigns, integrating direct mail, emails and BBG web pages, as well as supporting multichannel renewal and upgrade programs.
  • Collaborate with director and outside consultant on creation and execution of a multichannel spring and fall membership acquisition campaign.
  • Manage the Signature Plants benefit program, including coordinating invitations and materials, planning pickup events and running final reports.
  • Plan and manage member events, including Members’ Summer Evenings and Garden Circle quarterly events, through planning of programming/activities, event promotion, and day-of logistics. 
  • Ensure excellent customer service to the membership base, in partnership with the associate and Director, via telephone, email, mail, and in person. Supervise and provide training, troubleshooting and additional support to the associate, who serves as the frontline staff person for daily customer service.
  • Create monthly reports to track progress of the membership program for performance metrics in acquisition, retention, and revenue generation.
  • With director, manage budget development and track income and expenses.
  • Supervise the Data Entry and Operations associate in processing all gifts, coordinating fulfillment mailings, generating settlement reports, and maintaining membership database.
  • Supervise the associate in data entry, records management, and core office functions such as maintaining the inventory of printed benefit, retention, and acquisition materials including brochures, postcards, membership cards, renewal notices, etc.
  • Maintain strong institutional relationships to ensure the success of shared project goals; in particular with Communications, Design, Visitor Services, Operations and Facilities, Education, and Finance. 
  • Play active role as part of the larger Development team to strategize new ways to increase revenue for the Garden.
  • Participate in donor cultivation and special events as needed.

 
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 2+ years nonprofit experience, preferably in membership or fundraising
  • Excellent organizational skills, with ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously in a high-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Raiser’s Edge software or similar database system is required
  • Passion for writing and sharing BBG’s mission
  • Energetic team player able to work independently, as well as interact with members, donors, and staff of all levels
  • Background or strong interest in cultural institutions, environment, education, or and/science preferred
  • Be available to work evenings and occasional weekends, particularly during the Garden’s peak season (March–October) 
  • Ability to outside during events (15–20 times per year), as well as lift and carry membership and event materials as needed (lift no more than 25 pounds, 4–5 times a year)

 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary Range – $64,000 - $80,000
