THE OPPORTUNITY  

Supporting and advancing the work of unincorporated initiatives is a critical element of creating and sustaining three-dimensional, flexible, and robust social justice movements. Through fiscal sponsorship, Proteus Fund partners with emerging initiatives and innovative movement leaders as part of a powerful ecosystem for change. We view fiscal sponsorship as an essential strategy in achieving our mission. Our partnership with these strategic initiatives supports growth and collaboration that accelerates our collective impact and important wins for racial, gender, queer, and disability justice and inclusive democracy.

Our fiscal sponsorship practice is rooted in operational expertise covering all aspects of organizational infrastructure. We develop a deep understanding of projects’ needs in order to provide tailored, holistic, and comprehensive support. The Director of Fiscal Sponsorship directs Proteus Fund’s fiscal sponsorship practice. They lead the day-to-day work of implementing strategy, business development, service coordination, stewardship, and compliance for a program supporting a complex and diverse portfolio of 16 social justice initiatives. In this role, the Director of Fiscal Sponsorship is the lead relationship manager with Proteus Fund’s fiscally sponsored projects, developing a good understanding of the work and needs of each project and coordinating with the team of core staff that provide the operational infrastructure to support projects’ work. They serve as an expert on fiscal sponsorship for Proteus Fund and a thought partner and advisor for project leadership.

They represent Proteus Fund at conferences and events and works with a variety of internal departments including Donor Services, Finance, Grants Management, Human Resources, and Operations to ensure mission-aligned, high-quality programming in this area.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) remote position for an individual located in the U.S., with a preference for someone based in Eastern and Central time zones. The position requires at least 5% and up to 15% travel for internal meetings and retreats as well as conferences and other events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct Proteus Fund’s fiscal sponsorship program, including implementing strategy, business development plans, day-to-day service coordination, compliance, and overall stewardship for a complex and diverse portfolio of initiatives.
  • Cultivate, build, and direct the ongoing relationships with fiscally sponsored projects.
  • Direct new business development efforts, including responding to inquiries for new fiscal sponsorships, cultivating potential new partnerships, conducting due diligence, and presenting potential new fiscally sponsored projects to Executive Leadership.
  • With President, COO, and VP for Programs, identify synergies and facilitate potential connections among and between fiscally sponsored projects and Proteus Fund donor collaboratives, and create opportunities for cross-program learning.
  • Direct coordination of services provided a cross-functional team of finance, human resources, donor services, grants management, and operations colleagues, ensuring Proteus Fund provides consistent, multi-faceted client support that fosters and deepens relationships with fiscally sponsored projects.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS and other state and federal regulations for public foundations in serving as a fiscal sponsor.
  • Support strategic discussion with board and staff on fiscal sponsorship, including analyzing, recommending updates to, and managing a comprehensive structure for the fiscal sponsorship program.
  • Provide analysis and reporting on fiscal sponsorship portfolio.
  • Collaborate with President, COO, and others to communicate with a broader external audience about Proteus Fund’s fiscal sponsorship program, including generating website and newsletter content.
  • Coordinate possible organization-wide events engaging FSPs.
  • Provide the President, COO, and other staff with FSP data for organizational management and the creation and submission of proposals to a variety of donors and funders.
CANDIDATE PROFILE

The Director of Fiscal Sponsorship will have a bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of experience in a relevant philanthropic or nonprofit setting or at least ten years of experience in a relevant philanthropic or nonprofit setting. They have a demonstrated ability to link program vision and goals to the design and implementation of effective systems and processes. They are collaborative and look forward to managing and maintaining effective relationships with FSP partners, funders, and other stakeholders. Finally, they will use creative problem-solving tactics and analytical and decision-making skills with solution-oriented approaches.

Additional requirements and experience include:

  • Knowledge of and experience in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.
  • Experience in the identification and application of best practices in social justice fiscal sponsorship.
  • Skillful, culturally competent communication and ability to manage communications tactfully and professionally with customer service mindset.
  • Emotional intelligence to navigate sensitive and sometimes difficult subjects impacting a diverse set of communities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt and be versatile in a team-focused, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team that is diverse and inclusive with accountability and responsibility.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage a fast-paced work environment and work efficiently in a remote/virtual organization.
  • Ability to lead and coach a cross-functional team.

COMPENSATION

The starting salary for this role is $110,000 to $135,000 and is based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set level, years of previous/applicable experience, and Proteus Fund's commitment to ensuring pay equity within the organization. The recruiting team will share more details regarding salary bands based on the candidate's specific geographic location as well as the other factors noted above. Salary is one part of the total compensation that Proteus Fund provides to employees.
