President

Kenyon College invites nominations and applications for its 20th president.

Founded in 1824, Kenyon is one of the nation’s premier fully residential liberal arts colleges and the oldest private college in Ohio. The College has developed a distinctive identity and has earned an esteemed place among institutions of higher learning. Situated in Gambier, Ohio, the community enjoys a unique rural location with abundant environmental resources and a campus that strikes visitors with its beauty.

Kenyon’s mission is to build solid foundations for lives of purpose and consequence and to harness the transformative power of a liberal arts education—engaging in spirited, informed, and collaborative inquiry—to form a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the world and all who inhabit it. Kenyon’s offerings in the humanities, fine arts, natural sciences, and social sciences are decidedly strong. Notable academic strengths include a distinguished literary tradition, an emphasis on writing excellence, numerous opportunities for students to pursue independent and collaborative research in the sciences, a vibrant drama program, and interdisciplinary centers that promote research, dialogue, and action on pressing concerns such as democracy and sustainability. The College is a top producer of Fulbright Fellows and ranks second among Division III institutions for fostering NCAA Postgraduate Scholars. Nearly 1,900 individuals make up Kenyon’s student community. They represent a diverse group committed to the institution and to collaboratively building and broadening the campus culture. The College’s mission is further supported by over 200 accomplished teacher-scholars and dedicated staff.

Building upon the extraordinary success of outgoing president Sean Decatur, the next president will have the pleasure of working collaboratively with talented students, engaged staff, passionate faculty, devoted alumni, and a dedicated board to lead the campus to its next level of excellence. The president will be an experienced strategic thinker, well-versed in the issues facing higher education, specifically the small liberal arts sector, in the years ahead. They will be well-poised to prepare Kenyon to successfully navigate these challenges while continuing the College’s commitment to access and inclusion and maintaining the campus’s academic rigor. Furthermore, they will be passionate about engaging with the regional community, savvy with financial management, and zealous about fundraising and donor engagement. The ideal candidate will be a graceful and proactive communicator, displaying a boundless enthusiasm for advancing the College’s work. Ideal candidates will bring the intellectual depth to lead an academic community, a commitment to the liberal arts, success in financially supporting the mission of the College, a history of successful administrative achievements, and openness to collaboration with a range of external partners while displaying humility, empathy, a fearless and transformational attitude, and a healthy sense of humor.

For best consideration, please send all nominations and applications to:
