Opportunity IRAP is seeking a Director of
Institutional Philanthropy to work with a creative, dynamic, and
growing legal and human rights organization. Over the past few
years, IRAP’s Board, leadership team, and development team have
worked to build a strong network of engaged donors and supporters.
IRAP's selection as a member of The Audacious Project (housed at
TED)’s 2021-2022 cohort further elevated IRAP’s profile by
unlocking a transformational six-year investment and opening new
doors of fundraising opportunity. The organization’s prospect
pool is growing and IRAP is engaged in outreach and cultivation
efforts with corporate, individual, foundation, and multilateral
funders. Our institutional portfolio includes major U.S. and
European foundations, mid-sized foundations, faith-based
communities, corporate giving programs, and U.N. agencies. At this
time, the organization seeks an experienced, energetic Director of
Institutional Philanthropy to develop and implement strategies to
cultivate and steward relationships with institutional donors and
prospects, and continue the robust growth of this portfolio in
support of IRAP’s mission, vision, and programmatic
priorities. The department currently comprises six
team members, with one member based in New York City, two members
based in Washington, D.C., and three members based elsewhere in the
U.S. northeast. Two new hires, including the Director of
Institutional Philanthropy, will bring the department to a total of
eight dynamic members by early-mid 2023. The Director of
Institutional Philanthropy will be an integral part of the IRAP
team, reporting to IRAP’s Chief Development Officer.
Responsibilities
- Develop, direct, and implement a strategy to cultivate, steward, and solicit new and existing institutional donors and meet annual institutional fundraising goals.
- Secure transformational gifts (six figures-plus) and establish strong institutional revenue support through compelling, donor-centered relationship building.
- Develop and execute tailored annual engagement plans for each major institutional donor, including foundations, corporations, and multilateral funders such as the UN Refugee Agency.
- Prepare timely and compelling Letters of Interest, grant proposals, and reports.
- Work with the Development Strategist and Program Liaison and the Grants Manager to develop and track program-specific budgets required for restricted funding sources.
- Collaborate with the Grants Manager to prepare timely financial reports, as required or requested by donors.
- Alongside and in addition to formal reports, maintain warm, professional, customized communication with donors in alignment with their preferences, such as personalized VIP updates, event invitations, update calls, and email check-ins.
- Review program materials on a regular basis to stay updated on program developments and be able to knowledgeably pitch or update funders on the organization’s work.
- Provide strategic direction and support to the President and CEO, executive leadership team, and relevant program staff in preparation for meetings with foundation and corporate donors and prospects, including by proactively proposing meetings when appropriate, coordinating scheduling, and preparing our colleagues (including by providing background information, meeting goals, and talking points).
- Maintain an annual grants calendar to track and meet deadlines for proposals and renewals, reports, and other relationship outreach.
- Work towards continued strategic growth of the portfolio, including in new geographies and emerging program areas, by networking, prospect research, developing cultivation strategies, and continuing to proactively steward existing donors with additional capacity.
- Communicate regularly with the Chief Development Officer, appropriate leadership team members, and the Development Strategist and Program Liaison to understand potential programmatic funding needs, then identify and pursue institutional funding opportunities to meet those needs.
- Respond to special and one-off requests from institutions for development support, for example to help complete prize/award applications for which IRAP or IRAP staff may be eligible.
- Work with the Development Coordinator to update and maintain institutional donor records in the development CRM and the Master VIP list.
- Collaborate with the Evaluation and Learning team to anticipate and generate timely metrics data as required or requested by institutional donors.
- Collaborate with the individual philanthropy team on the stewardship of shared constituents, such as foundations with individual decision-makers.
- Work with the Development team to advance DEIA efforts in fundraising, including elevating client communities and supporting Development’s role in the achievement of organization-wide DEIA goals.
- Work with the Chief Development Officer to mobilize and support the fundraising activities of board members and the Development Committee.
- Support Development Strategist and Program Liaison and Development Manager by contributing to IRAP communications efforts, including the Report to Supporters, materials for fundraising work, and ongoing development of messaging and branding.
- Minimum of seven years of mission-driven experience; experience with nonprofit organizations, NGOs, and/or foundations would be beneficial.
- At least seven years of direct experience in the creation and management of an institutional donor program, including: grant writing, grant management, cultivating donor relationships, organizing events, prospect research, and implementing other forms of engagement and stewardship opportunities.
