The Development Team’s mission is to ensure that NCYL has the financial resources needed to pursue its mission and vision, and to uphold NCYL’s inclusive, youth-centered, strengths-based, and equity-focused values in all fundraising efforts and activities. NCYL’s five-member Development Team is raising $20M+ annually from foundations, government agencies, corporations, law firms, and individuals. We inspire NCYL supporters and educate them about NCYL’s values, impact, and work and build community and nurture strong relationships among NCYL board members, staff, alumni, and supporters through fundraising efforts.
NCYL seeks an experienced fundraiser to build out its individual, corporate, and law firm giving program and manage a portfolio of foundation relationships. The Development Manager will carry a portfolio of donors and foundations to secure funding for many of NCYL’s high-impact system reform projects that defend the rights of immigrant children, end child trafficking, protect students from identity-based bullying and harassment at school, hold foster care systems accountable, dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline, and increase young people’s access to sexual and reproductive health education and care. With a current portfolio of 800 individual donors giving $750,000.00 annually, the Development Manager will work across the organization to expand these relationships and increase financial support and will lead project management for institutional grants from foundations.
Individual, Corporate, & Law Firm Giving:
- Lead NCYL’s individual, corporate, law firm, and alumni giving programs
- Develop and implement NCYL’s major donor strategy to elevate a portfolio of donors with the ability to make significant philanthropic investments
- Lead strategy and implementation of NCYL’s end of year giving campaign, including the creation of appeals and social media content
- Facilitate and coordinate all communication with assigned donor portfolio and among NCYL staff and board members
- Partner with NCYL staff, alumni, supporters, and board members to develop and expand funding relationships
- Manage foundation and government grant proposals by drafting narratives, coordinating budgets, and ensuring timely submission of high quality applications
- Coordinate and track actions required to move foundation and government funding prospects through all stages of the cultivation process
- Research, identify and cultivate new foundation and government funding opportunities to support NCYL’s mission
- Support Development Team efforts to uphold and integrate organizational values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all fundraising-related efforts
- Five or more years of full-time work experience in non-profit fundraising or philanthropy
- Experience building or expanding individual and/or major gifts programs, including experience engaging directly with and making ambitious asks of donors
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with program and development colleagues as well as with organizational leaders
- Persuasive oral and written communication skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and project management skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
- Experience with MS Office software suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) or similar applications
- Experience successfully applying for and receiving significant foundation or government grants
- Experience using Salesforce for fundraising
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. This position may require some travel.
Salary, Benefits, and Location
This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is competitive at $111,585.00 annually. A geographic salary differential may be applied if the candidate resides somewhere other than the Oakland, CA, Los Angeles, CA, or Washington, DC areas.

Candidates must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Virginia, Washington DC or Wisconsin.
This position is eligible for 100% remote work through December 31, 2023. It is possible that starting in January of 2024, NCYL will require people to work in an office, in which case they will need to be in a location where they can commute to a NCYL office regularly (DC, Los Angeles, Oakland or Sacramento).
