Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), one of the nation’s top technological research universities, invites applications and nominations for the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement. The Vice Chancellor will join a campus community that is innovative, student-focused and committed to excellence, with a rich history of producing outstanding talent and cutting-edge research. In recent years, the university’s philanthropic activity has included a $300 million gift from alumnus Fred Kummer and his wife June – one of the largest private gifts in the history of U.S. higher education. The university has an ambitious vision for addressing key regional, national, and global challenges in the years ahead. The next Vice Chancellor of University Advancement will be tasked with building upon this exciting progress and elevating Missouri S&T’s development operation to facilitate the institution’s continued upward trajectory.
The Vice Chancellor of University Advancement serves as the visionary leader of a centralized development team, which includes the functional areas of major giving, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, alumni relations, donor relations, and affiliated support staff. Successful candidates will embody a spirit of innovation and possibility thinking, demonstrating their capacity to serve as a primary advocate for the institution by identifying and promoting compelling philanthropic opportunities that align with Missouri S&T’s strategic priorities as a STEM-focused public research university. The incumbent will also serve as a key liaison to Missouri S&T’s Board of Trustees, the Miner Alumni Association, and the Kummer Institute’s Board of Directors, in addition to maintaining strong working relationships with campus administrators and academic department heads. Minimum qualifications for the position include a bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of experience in related areas.
Additional key qualifications desired for this position include:
- An exceptional track record of major gift fundraising in a research university or comparable setting, with a demonstrated ability to identify and secure transformative principal or legacy gift commitments of $1 million and above
- A demonstrated willingness and ability to meaningfully engage corporations and foundations in high-impact philanthropic partnerships
- Strong foundational skills in prospect research, with an ability to effectively leverage data when assessing the philanthropic potential of alumni and prospective donors
- Excellent stewardship skills, including both an understanding of best practices in alumni outreach and innovative approaches to stewarding and maintaining engagement with high net-worth individuals
- Demonstrated capabilities in staff management and strategic leadership of development operations at the university level, including evidence of the skills and vision necessary to design and execute comprehensive fundraising campaigns and similar complex philanthropic endeavors
- Emotional intelligence and a proven ability to engage the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion when leading a philanthropic enterprise
