Grant Writer

Alabama Public Television (APT) is seeking a full-time, qualified applicant for the position of Grant Writer at its Birmingham office location. This position will serve as the key staff member responsible for the entire grant development and submission process for Alabama Public Television. The successful candidate will maintain a working knowledge of Alabama Public Television’s mission to help identify and apply for various grants that meet the organization’s needs and provide support and coordination to researchers and staff throughout the duration of the award.

Established in 1953 by an act of the Alabama State Legislature, Alabama Public Television (APT) was the first statewide public television network in the nation, and it was created to provide educational opportunities and services to Alabama residents through the latest and most prevalent technologies. Today, APT continues to serve Alabamians with original productions that tell Alabama’s story and various award-winning educational programs.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Researches and identifies new funding sources and the criteria required for each
  • Discusses available sources of funding with executive leaders
  • Compiles necessary information for the application process through collaboration with other APT departments including Corporate Support, Membership, Marketing, Educational Services, and Digital Media
  • Drafts and completes grant applications on time and within application parameters.
  • Works with the finance department to prepare monthly, quarterly, and/or annual reports to government, foundations, and other funders as required
  • Monitors financial administration of grants to ensure that proper documentation is submitted for expenditures and that requests for funds are made within time limitations specified
  • Coordinates the monitoring and evaluation of programs and projects that are funded by grants
  • Maintains records and submits reports related to grant opportunities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a grant writer for a nonprofit organization
  • Thorough understanding of grant funding policies and procedures and applicable local, state, and federal regulations
  • Verifiable experience submitting a major federal, state, or county level grant with many intricacies, deadlines, and deliverables helpful
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Organized with attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Ability to interpret financial data and prepare budgets and financial grant reports
  • Ability to be discreet with personal information that may be needed for some grants such as employee salaries or upcoming projects
