EDF delivers game-changing global climate change solutions

We are Environmental Defense Fund, the organization that is all-in on climate — the greatest challenge of our time. We’re a fast-paced nonprofit with a growing staff of more than 1,000 people in nearly 30 countries. We deliver game-changing solutions that cut climate pollution and strengthen people’s ability to thrive despite the effects climate change is already having. We work wherever we can have the most impact, from local communities to top companies, governments worldwide, and even in space.

Reporting to the President, the Chief of Staff (COS) supports both the President and the Executive Director of EDF in a highly strategic, facilitative, and enabling role within EDF. This role will collaborate with colleagues across the organization, deploying our resources to ensure that EDF’s top priorities are reflected in Executive Office activities, and EDF’s overall impact is increased. The COS will oversee consolidated Executive office functions, with the aim of optimizing the President’s and the ED’s schedule and time, ensuring opportunities are seized in pursuing the ambitious goals of the organization, supporting the Board, and driving engagement opportunities where relevant for the organization’s mission. As an integral role within EDF, the COS will bring to bear their skills, experience, and emotional intelligence to enable clear and consistent communication and collaboration throughout the organization.

In this role, we seek talented candidates who share the Core Values that allow us to experiment courageously in our work while staying true to who we've been as an organization for 50 years. The ideal candidate will bring a track record of experience as a Chief Executive, Executive Director, Chief of Staff, senior manager, or comparable position within a substantial and complex civil society organization, government agency or purpose-driven, for-profit corporation. We are seeking candidates with previous experience in a leadership position, with the ability to persuade, encourage, and motivate others in a highly collaborative setting. The successful individual will have notable experience gained with high-level Boards and a demonstrated ability to engage and build trusting relationships with a broad array of stakeholders, including donors, philanthropists, and elected officials. Alongside this, they will bring to bear superb oral and written communication skillset, with the ability to interact with a variety of constituencies both internally and externally, with tact and discretion. Most importantly, our next COS will demonstrate a sincere passion and ambition towards achieving EDF’s vision and goals. Prior work experience and expertise in related fields such as climate, environment, conservation is desirable, though not essential.
