As a key member of the Massachusetts General Hospital Development Office’s Donor Relations team, the Director is responsible for managing the Principal Gifts stewardship program, focused on strategically stewarding, retaining and further cultivating our top tier donors and prospects. The Director will partner with Donor Relations colleagues and Principal and Major Gift Officers to shape, lead and implement engagement opportunities that are meaningful to principal and major gift donors, demonstrate the impact of their giving to Mass General, and illustrate the hospital’s genuine gratitude for their giving and other contributions.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Donor Relations, the Director will play a primary role in overseeing the hospital’s top donor recognition society, in addition to managing their own stewardship portfolio. The Director will collaborate with the Senior Director to develop, streamline and maintain stewardship processes and systems and manage the Principal Gift Stewardship team.

The Director will work collaboratively with colleagues across the department and hospital to advise and implement individualized stewardship plans, programs and other deliverables, both virtual and in-person, during the Campaign for Mass General and beyond. The Director will also provide guidance and direction to senior leadership and volunteers in an effort to advance the culture of philanthropy across Mass General and successfully execute formal and informal stewardship strategies. 

The ideal candidate will have several years of experience managing teams and programs, excellent project management skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and internal and external business partners and stakeholders. They will be creative, strategic and possess skills and experience in systems/process development to help structure the work of a busy team. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the Principal Gifts (PG) Stewardship program to ensure that stewardship of our most generous donors is strategic, creative, and impactful
  • Lead, coach and mentor staff; cultivate a team-oriented culture of achievement; guide goal-setting; provide meaningful and timely performance evaluations
  • Oversee development, implementation and maintenance of dynamic stewardship processes and systems that ensure meaningful and sustainable donor stewardship
  • In collaboration with the Senior Director, oversee the hospital’s top donor recognition society, develop annual stewardship and communications calendars, work with gift officers to welcome and steward new members and manage key touchpoints and events for this cohort
  • Serve as stewardship manager for a portfolio of $5M+ donors, collaborating with gift officers to create and implement customized stewardship plans, including custom gifts and communications
  • Assign stewardship management portfolios for each PG team member and realign as needed
  • Lead efforts to create new initiatives and enhance existing deliverables to promote donor retention, inform donors about the impact of their philanthropy and inspire further giving
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop Principal Gifts reporting standards and formats in the new Ovrture platform, ensuring a highly personalized and elevated donor experience
  • Manage all aspects of report design, production and tracking for donors in portfolio; work with vendors, arrange photo shoots and collaborate with partners across the hospital to ensure accurate content and format
  • Oversee the recording, maintenance and integrity of stewardship data in the department’s CRM database and assist with development and maintenance of reports
  • Collaborate with Special Events and Integrated Marketing and Communications teams to design and carry out curated stewardship programs and experiences for top donors
  • Develop and manage trainings around best practices and procedures for the team
  • Help develop stewardship tools, resources and trainings for gift officers, as needed
  • Partner with colleagues to gather donor feedback to measure the effectiveness of the stewardship program and improve best practices
  • Partner with Development Talent Management to recruit, hire and onboard for vacant positions, ensuring diversity, equity and inclusiveness in hiring and recruiting practices
  • Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods
  • Proactively participate in professional development opportunities
  • Prepare and regularly update progress reports
  • Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Development leadership

Qualifications

This position requires a minimum of 7-10 years of related work experience and a bachelor’s degree.

  • Experience with Ovrture or digital stewardship software, preferable
  • Experience in video creation and editing, a plus
