Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Manager is responsible for researching donor prospects, preparing proposals, managing donor portfolio and other development tasks as needed.  Finalists will be asked to submit writing samples.

 At this time SELF is a fully virtual office but may open a physical office in the Washington, DC area in the future. Continued virtual work will be an option.

 The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) delivers sustainable solar power and wireless connectivity to rural villages in developing countries.  Operating at the cutting edge of solar technology, SELF provides clean energy for water pumps, health clinics, schools, homes, Internet kiosks, micro-enterprise centers and irrigation systems.  The goal is to improve health, education and economic opportunity for the nearly one billion people who live without electricity. 

 Duties and Responsibilities

Source, grow, and manage a strong portfolio of individual, foundation, corporate, government, and international aid agency funders in ways that expand our grant pipeline and drive collaboration and impact.  The Development Manager will be expected to work closely with the Executive Director as well as SELF’s Communications Manager.

Manage the full lifecycle of grants and institutional funders, including but not limited to: stewarding funders and keeping them informed, tracking submission and reporting deadlines, writing and submitting letters of intent, proposals, and reports, and pulling data for reporting purposes.

Look for opportunities for SELF to improve our individual donor and foundation management and engagement systems, processes, and strategies.

Closely track donor data and funder analytics and leverage data to drive fundraising and development strategy.

Work collaboratively across the organization to strengthen our partnership and grant strategy, including researching and writing grant proposals including: 

  • Proactively identify new funding opportunities and match to the Institute's programs. 
  • Manage annual appeals and other impact reports.
  • Design and prepare compelling concept notes, proposals, and reports for funders;
  • Create content to support the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to build and strengthen funder relationships;
  • Prepare contact reports of relevant funder/prospect conversations, meetings, and events.
  • Coordinate fundraising events and donor cultivation activities
  • Manage fundraising operations, including database functionality, record maintenance, data analysis, and gift administration.
  • Develop both personalized and public-facing communications materials in collaboration with our Communications Manager;
  • Maintain familiarity with program content, goals, and objectives, as well as organization-wide goals.
  • Manage coordination with Program,  Finance, and Communications teams to track progress against grant activities/outcomes, review grant awards, and report on grant expenses for assigned programs.
  • Support other development activities as they arise.

 

Ideal candidate will have:

Passion for renewable energy and addressing climate change in a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) context

Proven experience in managing individual donor stewardship & major gifts 

Ability to roll out strategies to maximize the donor life cycle by ensuring that touchpoints with the organization are strategic, intentional, and designed to maximize engagement and retention

Excellent writing skills

Ability to communication our mission effectively and create excitement about our work

Ability to organize, set priorities and manage multiple tasks

Ability to do basic research and to stay abreast of latest fundraising strategies

Ability to manage and synthesize donor data

Ability to work well with a team

Strong functional knowledge of Microsoft 360

Experience with CRM platforms, preferably Salesforce
