Senior Development Officer, ACLU-DC

The Senior Development Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of donors and prospects with the capacity to make contributions of $5,000 or more. The portfolio may include major gifts, annual funds, and planned giving donors. The Senior Development Officer builds meaningful relationships with current and new major donors, moves donors through the giving pipeline, and works with the Philanthropy Director to diversify the donor base.

Essential Functions

  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of donors with capacity above $5,000.  
  • Engage donors through one-on-one in-person meetings, events, phone, and personalized communications.   
  • Solicit planned gifts as part of comprehensive donor strategy.  
  • Meet annual and long-term portfolio goals for revenue growth. 
  • Coordinate with Director of Philanthropy and National ACLU colleagues on solicitation strategies.  
  • Utilize database to identify potential prospects and analyze fundraising progress.  
  • Work with program staff (legal, policy, communications, and organizing) on donor engagement opportunities and to develop content for proposals that align program priorities with donor interests.  
  • Participate in donor cultivation events.  
  • Maintain deep knowledge of D.C. and national ACLU programs and activities.  
  • Special projects and events and other duties as assigned by the Philanthropy Director.

Qualifications (Education & Experience)

Candidates who meet some but not all qualifications are encouraged to apply.

Required

  • 5-7 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising or relevant sales and marketing.  
  • A strong commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU of District of Columbia.  
  • Proven track record of soliciting and closing four- and five-figure gifts.  
  • Experience establishing and building strong, long-term partnerships with donors.  
  • Proven experience converting new donors/prospects into major donors. 
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve revenue goals.  

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent additional experience in nonprofit operations and/or fundraising.

Competencies

  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication and presentation skills.  
  • Ability to connect with people from different backgrounds and build relationships across differences.  
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks and finish projects within  
  • Computer proficiency, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong proficiency in Salesforce or similar CRM.  
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. 

Organization

The ACLU-DC is a non-partisan, non-profit public interest organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties of those who live and work in the District of Columbia. Our 23 staff members work daily to achieve this mission through advocacy before the D.C. Council, litigation, public education, and organizing in all eight wards of D.C. ACLU-DC is an affiliate of the national ACLU, the leading defender of civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. The ACLU works in communities, in the legislature, and in the courts to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. 

Work Environment 

  • Organization is currently hybrid remote with the option to work in the office. 
  • This position requires frequent in-person meetings and event attendance in the D.C. geographic area.
  • Residence in the D.C. geographic area is required (D.C., Maryland, or Virginia).

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $98,000 with an offer based on individual experience and abilities. Excellent benefits include paid time off, generous paid holidays, medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401K plan with employer matching.
