CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
CLINTON FOUNDATION
New York, New York (Midtown Manhattan) – Remote/Hybrid Flexibility

FOUNDATION OVERVIEW
Building on a lifetime of public service, President Clinton established the Clinton Foundation on the simple belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, everyone has a responsibility to act, and we all do better when we work together. For more than two decades, those values have energized the Foundation’s efforts to address big challenges, create new opportunities, and make a difference in people’s lives across the United States and around the world.

As an operating foundation, the programs and the partnerships the Clinton Foundation builds, through the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and others, work to expand economic opportunity, improve public health, confront the climate crisis, and inspire citizen engagement and service. The Foundation also operates the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, which enhances these efforts by providing year-round educational and cultural programming and is home to the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum. Programs are designed to make a real difference today while serving as proven models for tomorrow. The goal of every effort is to use available resources to get better results faster – at the lowest possible cost.

The Clinton Foundation firmly believes that when diverse groups of people bring resources together in the spirit of true cooperation, transformative ideas will emerge to drive life-changing action.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with headquarters in New York and Little Rock.

CONTEXT FOR RECRUITMENT AND ROLE SUMMARY
The Clinton Foundation has always believed in “putting people first” and that everyone plays a role in building a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world. As we have continued to grapple with the realities caused by a global pandemic, climate change, economic inequality, nationalism, and attacks to our fundamental human rights, it is as important as ever to confront these challenges and continue the work of creating a better future. The Foundation and its partners are meeting the urgency of this moment.

Notably, the Foundation has reconvened the Clinton Global Initiative community with a simple mission: take action together. Partners from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors came together to announce 144 new projects (“Commitments to Action”) in 2022. These projects are driving measurable action on climate, health equity, economic inclusion, women’s rights, and humanitarian response for refugees — particularly those suffering from Russia’s war on Ukraine. They join a growing portfolio of more than 3,800 projects announced through the Clinton Global Initiative since 2005 that are making a meaningful difference in the lives of 435 million people worldwide.

From advancing the progress of girls and women to engaging the next generation of leaders who are tackling pressing issues, and from transforming the everyday places children spend their time into healthier environments to strengthening democracy, the Clinton Foundation is committed to do more, do better, and help even more people build better lives for themselves and their communities.

Amid this landscape of programmatic preeminence, global impact, and forward-looking investment – including a pending capital campaign to enhance and expand the Clinton Presidential Center and build a permanent Hillary Rodham Clinton Institute – the Clinton Foundation seeks candidates for the role of Chief Development Officer (CDO). As a member of the Foundation’s Senior Leadership Team, this position provides strategic direction and management of the Foundation’s Development program. The CDO works closely with Foundation leadership and the offices of President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton to establish and achieve fundraising goals.

The Development team works to secure the philanthropic resources necessary to advance the Foundation’s mission through its programs and operations. The approximately 16-member team works closely with volunteers and colleagues from across the organization to present the Foundation’s case for support through gifts, grants, and sponsorships. Team members collaborate to maximize engagement and giving from individual donors and institutional funders alike.

The CDO will continue to grow a unique global donor population and collaborate with programmatic leadership as well as support services across the Foundation. Success in this role requires a creative and thoughtful approach to fundraising across programmatic themes, as well as for the Foundation overall. The CDO will lead a diverse team committed to excellence in event-driven fundraising, cultivation of individual donors, corporate sponsorships, and grant proposals.

While the Clinton Foundation will consider a broad range of backgrounds, the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications/experience:

  • Passion for the Clinton Foundation’s mission.
  • Fifteen years or more in nonprofit fundraising in positions of increasing responsibility. Experience in the creation and execution of development strategies and programs, with an established track record of growing a donor base and increasing philanthropic revenue. Experience should reflect a mastery of individual, corporate, foundation, planned, online, direct mail, and event-driven giving, with success in soliciting contributions of $1 million or more and leading significant annual, endowment, and capital campaigns.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and fundamental adherence to the full spectrum of modern, best-practice fundraising strategies and operations, as well as knowledge of the laws, statutes, and regulations related to fundraising.
  • Five or more years in a leadership role with strategic oversight of a significant team of development professionals. Agile in toggling between strategy, hands-on execution, and team leadership. Ability to recruit, manage, evaluate, and develop staff and contribute to the ongoing fostering of a results-oriented, multiracial/multicultural workforce. Experience managing budgets and revenue forecasts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to curiosity and openness, as well as an understanding of how to build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive development function; culturally competent with respect to issues such as racial, cultural, religious, sexual, and gender identity. Skilled at delivering solutions in evolving, multicultural environments.
  • Demonstrated success in developing the case for support and strategic, innovative fundraising plans, and executing those plans to grow fundraising and exceed goals. Experience collaborating with executives, senior staff, and board and other volunteer leaders on development-related activities, providing them with quality support and intelligence and increasing their comfort with and success in fundraising. Substantive experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from individual and institutional donors.
  • A forward thinker with a track record of utilizing new methods of constituent engagement and connectivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate data into decision-making and strategy development.
  • Working knowledge of modern data management practices and innovations that can streamline development processes and contribute to the integration of related functions. Familiarity with the following: Raiser’s Edge, Blackbaud CRM, or comparable development database; Microsoft Office suite, including Excel.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, and work on multiple time zones, as necessary.
  • Ability to work in a varying schedule, including nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
