Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) is a non-profit organization founded in 2013 to engage Republican policymakers and the public about responsible, conservative solutions to address our nation’s energy, economic, and environmental security while increasing America’s competitive edge. This work includes building out robust political and advocacy operations to support Republican clean energy champions in the U.S. House and Senate. In addition to working with members of Congress and legislative staffs to discuss policy ideas, the CRES team members also collaborate with industry representatives and subject matter experts in their mission to bring Americans together to solve our most pressing issues. CRES policy goals include: 

  • Reducing global emissions and growing the U.S. economy. 
  • Enacting policy that builds off historically successful approaches to affordable clean energy. 
  • Affordably reducing domestic emissions in a manner that can be leveraged globally. 

Scope of Work: 

CRES is growing! As a result, the Media & Communications Manager ("MCM") is a new position in the Communications Team that will collaboratively execute a comprehensive communications and media strategy that advances CRES' strategic priorities, mission, and vision and prevents backsliding in public positioning regarding climate and clean energy. Reporting to the Senior Communications Director and working cross-departmentally with CRES' Government Affairs, External Affairs, and Policy teams, the MCM is instrumental in outward-facing communication and media outlets to engage federal and state legislators, policymakers, and the public. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Drafts press releases, advisories, talking points, op-eds, and other communications materials 
  • Stays informed on the current issues impacting CRES and anticipates any inquiries from the media 
  • Monitors news to determine how the media portrays CRES and its agenda 
  • Prepares CRES teammates for interviews, including TV, radio, print, and other public appearances 
  • Builds relationships with key reporters to book CRES teammates for media spots 
  • Monitors key reporters’ articles and social media 
  • Manages the media distribution lists 
  • Manages the creation of the CRES newsletters and ensures materials are distributed as planned 
  • Monitors communications and public statements from members of Congress related to CRES priorities 
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Personal and Professional Attributes: 

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills 
  • Experience producing communications and evaluating message effectiveness 
  • Able to manage varying priorities in a fast-paced working environment and balance multiple and tight deadlines 
  • Experience managing relationships with members of the media and reporters  
  • Experience developing a communications strategy for a Member of Congress, or a public, private, or non-profit organization 
  • Ability to develop and apply creative solutions to enhance messaging strategies 
  • Strong attention to detail and editing skills  

Education and Experience: 

Required: 

  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar role 
  • Degree in Communications or relevant field of study 
  • Outstanding writing and communication skills 
  • Experience writing press releases and op-eds 

Preferred: 

  • Knowledge of energy and/or environmental policy 
  • Communications, marketing, or journalism experience 
  • Experience working in in federal or state government 
  • Experience working at a not-for-profit or similar organization as CRES 
  • Experience working cross-collaboratively with government affairs, external affairs, and policy teams 
  • Social media management
