THE OPPORTUNITY

Code2040 is looking for a dynamic Development Director, energized by working at the intersection of technology and racial equity. Code2040 is at an incredible moment in its growth, attracting attention ranging from community-based allies and Black & Latinx technologists, to national foundations and international tech giants. The right candidate for this position will bring strong foundational competency and experience in fundraising, finance, communications, and data management. They will love building and maintaining fundraising programs on a variety of platforms to strategically meet ambitious revenue goals. They will also have experience and comfort with major gifts, moves management, public-private partnerships, and community engagement.

 

Code2040 is led by a visionary CEO who is a skilled and talented fundraiser committed to building and stewarding relationships with values-aligned funders and donors. The Development Director will collaborate with the CEO and Development team staff to create and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy with a focus on long-term sustainability. The Development Director will supervise a Development Associate and contractors. 

 

Code2040 has an annual budget of $4.3M with half of that raised from contributed revenue sources, including institutional funders and individual supporters. The Development Director will be responsible for leading a cohesive fundraising program that seeks to grow Code2040’s revenue through ethical, values-aligned fundraising tactics. Additional goals include building and maintaining systems, structures and processes that support a healthy Development department, building a consistent Development communications practice, and helping take our organization to the next level.

Key Priorities and Responsibilities:

 

    Racial Equity: Our focus is the full participation and leadership Black and Latinx people in the innovation economy and commitment to these communities is a must. Code2040 encourages candidates that have lived or adjacent experience to that of our served community to join our largely BIPOC leadership team.

    Leadership, Collaboration & Team Management - 20%: During a time of heightened visibility, substantial growth and internal transition, this position will affirm healthy best practices and culture by utilizing an ethical approach to fundraising rooted in community-centric fundraising principles, and partner with the CEO and staff to foster a collaborative fundraising culture across the organization. Working closely with the CEO, the position will explore ways to engage Code2040’s Board of Directors to more effectively move resources to our work. Additionally, the role will provide leadership and mentorship to Development staff and guidance to contractors to ensure contributed revenue and other team goals are met. This person will be responsible for setting team priorities and project managing key projects toward desired outcomes.

 

    Fundraising Strategy - 30%: The Director of Development will help shape and name a fundraising framework that amplifies Code2040’s vision and connect fundraising goals and tactics to the organization’s strategic priorities. This role will lead the process to co-create comprehensive annual fundraising plans for Code2040, including strategies for institutional funders and individual supporters. The right candidate will have a strong appetite for developing and implementing new and creative approaches to engage our donor and funder base, maintain and strengthen existing relationships, and expand our network, especially in the technology world. In partnership with the Development Associate and Fundraising Consultants, the Development Director will also be responsible for implementing fundraising strategy into an actionable work plan.

    Major Gift Fundraising - 20%: The Development Director will be responsible for managing and growing an individual giving program to more effectively manage relationships with supporters who have the capacity to move significant resources to Code2040. This includes portfolio management, designing and managing solicitation strategy, utilizing the donor CRM to track engagement and outreach, providing regular coaching and staffing the CEO and other senior leadership staff in their relationship building efforts.

 

    Development Communications - 10%: This position will contribute to the strategy behind development-related communications that support the organization in community engagement and supporter retention goals, with an emphasis on creating impact storytelling to help our community understand the “to what end” of our work. This will include strategic communications across multiple platforms and collaborating with our Communications function.

    Institutional Funder Strategy - 10%: In collaboration with the CEO and grants contractor, the DD will provide thought partnership and strategic support to steward, cultivate, and deepen engagement with current and prospective funders.

 

 

  • Board Engagement - 10%: In collaboration with CEO and senior leadership staff, this leader will provide support to Code2040’s Board of Directors, helping ensure Board members have foundational understanding of the organization’s development strategy. The person will partner with the Board in co-creating ways that they can individually engage in and provide material support for our fundraising efforts.

 



Ideal Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

    5+ years of non-profit development experience, including previous experience as a Development Director Intellectually curious and interested in utilizing an ethical approach to fundraising  Solid foundational understanding of development department functions and operations including donor CRMs, online giving and communications platforms (ex: GiveButter, MailChimp, YAMM), gift processing procedures, and gift acceptance policies Experience with annual revenue goal setting, managing budgets, and tracking outcomes for success  Experience in developing, implementing, and managing a robust annual giving program Experience in developing, implementing, and managing a major gifts program, including demonstrated experience and comfort soliciting five-figure and higher gifts Excellent analytic and strategic thinking skills, with comfort using data to analyze fundraising metrics and outcomes Highly organized with attention to process and follow-through Experience with a multicultural workforce – people who are diverse in age, race, disability, gender and gender expression – is required A commitment to social justice and sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences is required Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, staff, and counsel from a diverse range of communities Clear interpersonal communication skills including the ability to communicate deadlines and boundaries Proficient knowledge of Google products

 

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a full-time position with an anticipated salary range of between $110,000 and $128,000, depending on experience.

Staff averages 5-8 weeks of vacation per year – not including sick time, personal time, and mental health days 2+ weeks off during the holiday season (dependent on organizational health) because we deserve to end and start the year with rest $1500 work-from-home office setup stipend upon starting your position, $500 every year after that $1500/year for professional development because we’re constantly growing and evolving and that takes investment in our collective learning $1500/year for a work for anywhere stipend so you can get out of your house and see and be somewhere different. Take that trip you’ve been thinking about and take your meetings from a beach somewhere. Or wherever else you wanna be!  $150/month phone and internet stipend because you can’t do this job without reliable, consistent internet $75/month snack and food stipend to keep you fueled throughout your day. We’d buy you snacks in the office so why not remotely? :)  Code2040’s operations are 100% remote and its team is located across the United States, primarily in California. We gather once per year as a team with options for individuals and teams to travel to gather in-person. This is contingent on following COVID protocols because we’re still in this pandemic and we’re invested in keeping each other as safe as possible.
