Overview
Reporting jointly to the Associate Vice President for University Advancement and the Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics, the Director of Advancement will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of major gift prospects for the Division of Athletics. S/he will serve as the leader of the Athletics Advancement team within the division of University Advancement. His/her primary focus will be to solicit and close major gifts (defined as gifts of $50,000 and higher) for the benefit of the Division of Athletics. The position collaborates closely with the central University Advancement team, which provides resources and strategic counsel, and uniform metrics to help drive results within the schools and divisions across the University. The Director also participates in the collaborative effort in building alumni engagement and communicating the Athletic Division’s mission, vision, and achievements to key donor, alumni, and additional external constituencies. He/she participates in setting annual targets and long-term philanthropic strategy for the Athletics Division, and helps to organize and set the Division’s philanthropic priorities in order to maximize external support.
Responsibilities
- Build, grow, and manage a portfolio of approximately 125 major gift prospects ($50,000+) based on new and past donors including Athletics Alumni. The Director of Advancement will be expected to conduct at least 125 prospect visits annually, soliciting and closing 15-25 major gifts and qualifying the same number of new major prospects each year. While yearly gift revenue goals will vary, the Director must build upon a robust program that currently generates mid six-figure revenue annually, to achieve the aspiration of a seven-figure program by the end of the campaign.
- Collaborate with the Associate Vice President & Athletic Director to develop an annual work plan, consistent with prescribed practice in the Division of University Advancement. The workplan will include a personal fundraising goal, goals for number of new major gift prospects identified, number of major gift and annual fund solicitations and number of prospect visits sufficient to meet established fundraising targets.
- Build and maintain volunteer leadership through engagement with the Athletic Division's Board of Visitors, and other alumni or external constituencies key to the School's fundraising success. Help recruit new members to grow the board and with that the pool of flexible revenue the dean can use to pursue opportunities and create new programs.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff as applicable. Current staffing includes an Asst. Director, Leadership Annual Giving, whose main priority is conducting high volume discovery work for the Athletics program.
- Work with the Associate Vice President and Athletic Director and the central Advancement staff to cultivate strong working relationships with coaches and staff members of the division who are overseeing teams and programs. Continuously educate and steward the coaches and staff to help incentivize them to participate in philanthropic work.
- Direct the school efforts in planning, executing and marketing Athletics Division events and special initiatives aimed at cultivating donors, engaging alumni, and enhancing the visibility and reputation of the division.
- Work with the Division's Budget Office, Finance team, and University Advancement to align gift accounts and operational budget.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required with directly applicable professional experience of four (4) to five (5) years, with two (2) to three (3) years in major gift fundraising. A documented record of productivity and results. Development/advancement experience within a large, highly complex non-profit business environment. Higher Education experience/experience working with athletics programs or institutions strongly preferred. Should have a demonstrated track record of developing, soliciting, and securing 5 and 6 figure gifts. Experience managing volunteer leadership groups for philanthropic purposes (board management).
Skill in using development-related database systems. Proficiency with the Google suite of products.
Possession of current and valid U.S. driver’s license appropriate to the type of university vehicle and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record (MVR) as stipulated in the Vehicle Guidelines and Procedures Manual administered through the office of Environmental Health and Safety. Annual clearance of MVR check through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
