Associate/Professor of Professional Practice in Nonprofit Management

The School of Professional Studies (SPS) at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time position at the level of Associate Professor of Professional Practice or Professor of Professional Practice to teach in the MS program in Nonprofit Management. The program includes three full time faculty and more than 30 adjunct faculty. It draws a diverse group of students and is offered online and in person. The degree prepares graduates for leadership roles within mission-driven organizations in a wide variety of contexts, including philanthropic foundations and global and community nonprofits.

 This position will begin on January 1, 2024 but can be delayed until July 1, 2024. This is a full-time appointment with a multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.

 The successful candidate will teach two courses in both the fall and spring semesters (i.e., a 2:2 course load) related to nonprofit management in one or more of the following areas: 

•  Nonprofit management, including touching on overarching themes around vision, strategy, financial management, and people management.

• Nonprofit fundraising, including grant writing, soliciting donations from philanthropies and government, earned income streams and other sustainable and scalable business models.

• Innovation in the nonprofit sector, including social entrepreneurship, public-private partnerships, impact investing and new funding models.

• Evaluation and data-driven approaches to improving nonprofit and philanthropic practice, including performance measurement, impact measurement and scaling impact.
  
  

In addition to teaching and pedagogical responsibilities, the successful candidate may be offered the opportunity to serve as the program’s director to lead programmatic efforts and strategic planning. Program Director responsibilities include marketing/student recruiting, budgeting and planning, student life, alumni affairs, and professional development opportunities for students. Finally, directors also participate in admissions review, instructional design, student mentoring, and overall development of the program.

The ideal candidate will have a background both as a practitioner and scholar and exhibit a commitment to excellence in the classroom and professional practice. Candidates should hold a terminal degree or have extensive professional experience in nonprofit leadership, nonprofit management, public administration, philanthropy or fundraising. Candidates should also exhibit a commitment and history of excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and professional practice and/or scholarship.    

Applicants with an earned doctorate are strongly preferred. This can include the JD degree, the PhD or other doctorate degrees.

Candidates at the rank of Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, a superlative record of teaching, and documented evidence of excellence scholarship or exemplary success running a nonprofit.

Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of excellence in their field, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector.
