The Director of Advising, Institutional Advancement, which reports to the Executive Director, Valiente Fund, driving institutional revenue strategy and acquisition throughout the opportunity lifecycle (from opportunity identification to award acceptance); building and implementing an institutional stewardship strategy; developing capture strategies and tactics; managing the production and writing of winning proposals; and, identifying and implementing systemic investments needed to support continued scale in institutional support; positions the Valiente Fund and Valiente Action Fund within the broader ecosystem; represents with institutional funders and grantees; and leads the institutional strategy. 


The Director of Advising, Institutional Advancement will 

  • Collaborate with the ED, Valiente Fund to develop and manage an institutional development strategy that results in Way to Win’s receiving and deploying resources needed to deliver on its mission of equity and economic opportunity;
  • Develop and maintain a robust portfolio of institutional donors and prospective donors, including the advising and advancement of cultivation and solicitation strategies; 
  • Direct and lead in the writing, editing, and review of grant proposals, letters of inquiry, stewardship materials, and other correspondence to foundations that relate to strategic initiatives;
  • Work with Way to Win’s vehicle executive team to understand future and current programs and deployment needs;
  • Develop, identify, and internally socialize and communicate multi-year resource needs based on program and deployment priorities;
  • Direct grant compliance and ensure status of open grants; timely processing of agreements; completion of projects within grant terms; and accurate and timely reporting;
  • Lead in collaboration with staff across teams to advance organizational objectives, including assigning proposals and projects, guiding, drafting, and editing written proposals, facilitating and cultivating relationships with key Valiente Fund staff and donors, developing project management capabilities, and mentoring staff on internal and external institutional advising practices; 
  • Coach, mentor, and retain well-qualified and culturally diverse staff, developing work plans, organizing workflow, delegating assignments, monitoring productivity and performance, and providing constructive feedback and coaching;  
  • Facilitate collaboration among all Valiente Fund and Valiente Action Fund staff to maximize funding opportunities and ensure the development of comprehensive proposals; 
  • Support cultivation and proposal development from individual donors by working in coordination with the ED, Valiente Fund where donor advised funds are involved;  
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Design teams on funding opportunities that involve public engagement, marketing, and promotions (cause-related marketing, advertising, content partnerships, etc.); 
  • Prepare the President, staff, and high-level volunteers for fundraising calls, including ensuring preparation of briefing materials; 
  • Provide strategic guidance to the Executive Director, Valiente Fund and team leaders to improve the team's effectiveness and efficiency in raising funds; 
  • Represent Valiente Fund to external partners and constituents throughout the country; and 
  • Work to achieve all Valiente Fund strategic goals, including engaging the public and reaching more diverse communities and constituents.

  • A strong track record in managing people. You can motivate a high-performing team to knock it out of the park according to the metrics that you helped to set. As a manager, you know how to delegate skillfully and give meaningful feedback. You have experience holding a team accountable and providing support and direction for growing edges. You are well organized with great time management skills. You have experience managing staff who work remotely. 
  • A nuanced race and oppression analysis. You recognize the ways that race and other identities intersect in our work and are driven to make changes in systems and practices to operationalize equity. Your leadership will help to create a culture that fosters a sense of joy, trust, and belonging, especially for staff with marginalized identities.
  • Experience raising money for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations. You’ve worked in organizations with c3 and c4 vehicles. You understand policy, party messaging, and grassroots organizing. You’re not afraid to ask for six figure gifts. You can make complex political concepts both accessible and inspiring to donors who aren’t political insiders.  You know how to create systems and structures that foster alignment and collaboration around both big goals and essential details. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • 8+ years of direct experience in institutional advancement for charitable, advocacy and/or political organizations.
  • Successfully managed advising teams.
  • Thorough understanding of advising systems.
  • Experience with foundations and donor networks.
  • Strong listening, interpersonal, communication, time management, and problem-solving skills while maintaining a devotion to detail.
