Departmental Overview



The Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) team at Berkeley Haas engages and fosters alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations to advance the vision and mission of the school. This includes inviting key constituencies to provide volunteer leadership and make philanthropic investments in support of the school's students, faculty and programs. The Development team of major gift and annual gift officers cultivates prospective donors, both nationally and internationally to inspire transformational gifts in support of Berkeley Haas. The department also provides staff support for high-level volunteer groups such as the Berkeley Haas Advisory Board. With 43,000 living alumni, the Alumni Relations team builds and develops greater awareness for career services, lifelong learning and networking resources to support the engagement, learning and cultivation of Berkeley Haas alumni.





The Haas Development and Alumni Relations team embraces flexible working arrangements for its employees. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs, and are subject to change. This role is eligible for a hybrid work plan, but expected to be based in the Bay Area.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director of Development at the Haas School of Business is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team in Development and Alumni Relations at the Haas School of Business. The role is responsible for setting the strategic direction of and goals for the frontline fundraising team, which includes principal, major, leadership and corporate gifts. At the general direction of the Assistant Dean for Development, the Executive Director will oversee all aspects of our fundraising strategy, including developing strategic priorities and case materials. They will be critical in translating organization-wide strategies into fundraising priorities and donor opportunities which will aid in growing our fundraising revenue - an important driver of realizing the Dean's goals for the school. This position has five direct reports and oversees a team of ten frontline fundraisers and two support staff. We are seeking a candidate with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging and an equity-fluent approach to leadership.

Sets strategy and goals for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors and donor prospects for the unit.
  • Determines and crafts fundraising priorities by translating school's funding needs into donor opportunities in consultation with faculty, senior campus leaders, and school leaders.
  • Sets the unit's strategy for prospect solicitation; partners with teams in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) such as prospect development, principal gifts and major gifts to actualize.
  • Consistently drives and manages strategic, personalized engagement with donors. Strategies reflect the intersection between prospects' interests and priorities and the school's needs and goals.
  • Sets team strategy for reaching annual and campaign fundraising goals.
  • Responsible for raising $3M+ annually from a portfolio of up to 50 major and principal gift donors and leaders.
  • Convene and lead strategy meetings for principal and campaign prospects rated $5M or more with relationship managers and other staff integral to the advancement of these relationships.

Manages a moderately complex fundraising program comprised of the full range of development programs and includes responsibility for other external relations functions. This includes events, volunteer coordination and management, donor relations and stewardship, and other marketing related activities.
  • Provides senior-level management to principal, major, and leadership gifts teams, including staff overseeing reunion, young alumni, student and corporate giving.
  • Oversees all aspects of the post-campaign fundraising, including guiding the strategic priorities and giving opportunities, determining strategies for donor events, and developing the case for support for the Dean's initiatives.
  • Works with colleagues in Marketing and Communications, Information Strategy and Analytics, and Events to develop tools, engagement opportunities, and marketing materials that support the frontline fundraising team.
  • Collaborates with the Chief Development Officer and Senior Leadership Team to ensure we are following best practices and developing effective processes and procedures for the advancement team.

Manages a staff comprised of several fundraising managers overseeing frontline fundraising teams and related administrative support staff.
  • Manages a team of five direct reports with indirect supervision over an overall team of ten frontline fundraisers and two support staff.
  • Develops annual performance metrics and goals for principal, leadership and major gift officers.
  • Leads team meetings and annual team retreats.
  • Leads regular strategy sessions with frontline fundraisers.
  • Serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team in Development and Alumni Relations.

Conceives, creates, develops, implements, evaluates and manages development programs and strategies to meet predetermined goals and objectives, ensuring predetermined goals are met.
  • Collaborates with the Chief Development Officer, Dean of the Haas School of Business, and senior leadership across the campus to translate and implement department-wide strategies into campaign priorities and donor strategies.
  • Continually (re)deploys resources to reach goals and to serve the department to maximum effect in a complex and ever-changing fundraising environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of leadership / management concepts, procedures, techniques and best practices. Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work across a complex organization, and to provide leadership and coaching to staff members.
  • Excellent leadership/management skills to select, train, mentor, and evaluate staff. Ability to set clear expectations and goals for a team and provide feedback that improves performance and motivates a team.
  • Critically strong written, oral and interpersonal communications skills, including strong political acumen in order to build and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Exceptional skills in meeting predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals. Demonstrated ability to raise donor sights, articulate aspirational goals and ideas, and present philanthropic opportunities.
  • Excellent strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, persuasion/negotiation and marketing skills.
  • Prior experience planning, leading, and successfully completing a multi-million dollar campaign within higher education or another nonprofit institution. Experience helping to guide the strategic priorities of a campaign.
  • Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision-making to achieve organizational objectives and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a goal-oriented team environment.
  • A successful track record of securing seven- and eight-figure gifts.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

Education/Training



Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.



Preferred Qualifications



Experience working for a non-profit, foundation, or academic environment preferred.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.



The budgeted salary range / annual pay scale that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $180,000.00 - $220,000.00.

The full salary range for this position classification is $129,600.00 to $254,400.00.
