The RAND Corporation is seeking an Executive Director, Development RAND to generate philanthropic support from a west-coast based portfolio of individuals and to oversee a team of development officers and annual giving staff. 

This position works closely with the Chief Development Officer and RAND research leadership to successfully solicit major and principal level gifts from existing and new prospects. This position must be able to think strategically and practically to implement a comprehensive and results oriented development plan that includes traditional and innovative strategies. The Executive Director reports directly to the Chief Development Officer and is part of the development leadership team. The Executive Director will manage a team and will be responsible for helping develop strategies for major and principal gift solicitations. Some of the duties include: 

  • Manage a large and varied portfolio of donors, soliciting gifts ranging from five figures all the way up to eight figures; develops and implements cultivation and stewardship strategies. 

  • Manage a team of staff members (development officers and annual giving), including performance management and performance reviews. 

  • Overall campaign and/or fundraising management and organization including pipelines, prospect tracking, strategy, task assignment and maintenance of timelines. 

  • Work with Chief of Development and others on fundraising and/or major gift strategies for support RAND’s priorities 

  • Oversees annual giving staff and is able to support a growth strategy 

  • Serves as a resource and adviser for researchers in developing strategies for their work with donors 

  • Implements donor engagement activities, working with the donor relations team, including large-scale events and more intimate salon-style events. 

  • Serves as a member of the Development leadership team, contributing to RAND’s overall direction and priorities. 

  • Develops annual operating plans for fundraising, and tracks progress against measurable targets. 

  • Remains up to date on RAND products and content; is able to represent RAND effectively to donors. 


  • Experience identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, securing and stewarding individual donors at the annual, major, and principal gift levels. 

  • Demonstrated ability to build effective and collaborative relationships with wide set of constituencies. 

  • Demonstrated track record of solid accomplishments in fundraising. 

  • Experience managing major gift and annual fund or membership staff; understanding of how to effectively coach on moves and portfolio management. 

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and ability to communicate with internal leadership and external funders. 

  • Computer skills to utilize fundraising and donor databases. 

  • Direct supervisory experience. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion including working with a variety of people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives across all levels in a collegial, collaborative, and intellectually challenging environment. 

  • Ability to travel regularly (required). 

  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check (required). 


Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred 


Minimum of 6 years of experience; 9  years preferred 


Santa Monica (hybrid – in office averaging 2-3 days a week) 

Salary range
$142,000- $216,500  

RAND considers a variety of factors when formulating an offer, including but not limited to, the specific role and associated responsibilities; a candidate’s work experience, education/training, skills, expertise; and internal equity. The salary range includes base pay plus RAND’s sabbatic pay (which provides additional compensation above base pay when vacation is taken).
