Yamba Malawi is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending childhood poverty. Established in 2006, we aim to disrupt the cycle of poverty by equipping parents and caregivers with a unique blend of economic, educational, health, and social tools, which facilitates the creation of household-run businesses. Our distinctive approach is the world's only child-focused ultra-poverty graduation program. Through our initiatives, we offer holistic support in parenting and early childhood development, livelihoods and entrepreneurship, as well as financial literacy and inclusion. Embracing a community-centered method, our mission transcends merely combating poverty for children. We are setting the foundation for a resilient, thriving future in Malawi and beyond.

By the close of 2023, our partnerships will span over 3,500 ultra-poor households across five out of Malawi’s 28 national districts. As a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Yamba Malawi operates with dedicated staff and has established offices in Lilongwe, Malawi, and New York City.


The position is responsible for stewarding Yamba Malawi’s institutional donor portfolio, which today is valued at $5MM and will be expected to grow by at least 20% during the course of the next strategic period (2024-2027). The position will report to the Director of Development and will collaborate across all teams. 

The Institutional Fundraising Manager plays a critical role in identifying new areas of collaboration and leveraging new resources to expand the scope and impact of Yamba Malawi’s transformative work. The portfolio includes both philanthropic and public sector donors, multilateral institutions, foundations and corporations. The role will lead efforts to steward existing philanthropic relationships and engage new partnerships to achieve YM’s objectives. The Institutional Fundraising Manager will identify opportunities and develop targeted and timely grant proposals that effectively communicate YM’s work to existing and prospective funders. They will also be responsible for designing, building, and managing systems that will facilitate strong and fruitful relations with a broadening range of funders. 


  • Steward and cultivate relationships with existing and prospective funders 
  • Draft compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and applications for awards, conferences, and speaking opportunities
  • Coordinate across teams to gather up-to-date programmatic input and develop compelling proposals aligned with organizational priorities
  • Conduct prospect research for new funding opportunities 
  • Oversee timelines and deliverables for active grants
  • Streamline reporting processes in collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure punctual submission of grant reports
  • Collaborate with programmatic teams to for data collection, management, and reporting on program outcomes and impact
  • Utilize YM’s donor database to track all existing and prospective donors in the institutional fundraising portfolio 
  • Keep portfolio data up-to-date weekly in donor database 
  • Collaborate with Director of Development on monthly revenue reporting 
  • Use complex programmatic impact data in compelling easy to understand ways 
  • Craft impactful content to help donors stay connected to our mission and impact



  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required; Master’s preferred
  • A minimum of five to seven years in a fundraising role
  • Experience managing a portfolio of grants from varying types of funders
  • Strong grant writing experience for both philanthropic and public sector donors
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and ability to develop clear and persuasive materials under tight deadlines
  • Attention to detail in written deliverables and ability to independently manage processes for ensuring accuracy in written work
  • Experience managing donor portfolio information in a database 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and relationship-building qualities
  • Strong organizational skills and flexibility to handle multiple tasks at once
  • Knowledge of Southern Africa and challenges related to extreme poverty is preferred, but not essential
  • Commitment to advancing social justice
  • High degree of English fluency required


Starting salary for the role is $US 82,000 and commensurate with experience. Yamba Malawi offers competitive benefits including 5 weeks of paid vacation/personal days and 6 days of paid sick leave, health insurance, 401K, life insurance, and more.
