One for Democracy is seeking an experienced donor advisor to manage a portfolio of relationships with philanthropists who are passionate about advancing our democracy, who are moving a minimum of $500,000 per year. The Advisor will advise UHNWIs on their philanthropic strategies and support their giving needs, and will do so by developing meaningful, trusting relationships while leveraging their extensive sector expertise.

The Advisor will ultimately drive the engagement strategy for each of their assigned and/or owned relationships, and will develop research briefs (with support from the Programs team), curate giving portfolios, and maintain a high-touch approach for their relationships.

The Advisor will have excellent communication and diplomacy skills, exceedingly high emotional intelligence, and demonstrated experience working with UHNWIs. In-depth expertise in the pro-democracy impact sector and philanthropy will be critical to success in this role.

About One for Democracy

One for Democracy’s mission is to unlock resources to build a healthy democracy by creating opportunities for deep partnership and collective impact among philanthropists and the democracy leaders of our time. Our community funds ambitious, long-term visions to invest in inclusive, pluralistic democratic institutions.

Our team leads a participatory sourcing and selection process to identify visionary leaders and organizations in need of funding, and we work with philanthropists to connect them to opportunities in line with their own missions and interest areas. Our events are collaborative spaces that connect leaders, catalyze collective giving, and cultivate healthy, long-term relationships among peers in the democracy ecosystem.

Since our founding in 2020, we have raised over $160M for civic engagement and healthy democracy organizations. One for Democracy has a standalone 501(c)(4) entity and a 501(c)(3) entity that is fiscally sponsored by Goodnation Foundation.

Approach to Advising

One for Democracy has an intentional approach to advising and relationship management with UHNWIs, which reflects:

  • Accountability not just to donors, but to the democracy leaders we resource.
  • We serve as a bridge between leaders and people with wealth who can support leaders’ vision. We don’t act as gatekeepers.
  • High-collaboration, low-ego. When we don’t know the answers, we don’t pretend to. And when another network is a better fit for a donor, we direct them there.
  • Strong emphasis on the depth and quality of relationships as a foundation for strategic advising.
  • A positive-sum approach to advancing democracy. We support a wide array of programming across various areas:
  • Inspiring civic and democratic participation
  • Modernizing elections and protecting those who oversee them
  • Improving information and media ecosystems
  • Protecting and evolving democratic norms, institutions, and processes
  • Collaborative relationship management. Multiple team and Board members likely have existing relationships with UHNWIs in Advisors’ portfolios. Those relationships are a strength that requires coordination.
  • Openness to high-trust and high-rigor philanthropic approaches. UHNWI preferences will vary.

Skills and Characteristics

The right candidate will have the following skills and characteristics:

  • Ability to manage multiple relationships and concurrent assignments with a high degree of accuracy, flexibility, and poise
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner, both written and verbal, with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to build relationships and trust across varied geographies and cultures
  • Deep curiosity to learn about a vast array of pro-democracy strategies that span multiple issue areas and geographies
  • Desire to learn and work in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment
  • Excellent project management skills, and ability to work quickly, calmly, and efficiently in an environment that is often reactive to donors’ needs

  • 10+ years of philanthropic advisory, partnerships or relevant nonprofit experience
  • Experience in client-facing roles working with UHNWIs
  • In-depth expertise in the pro-democracy impact sector
  • In-depth knowledge of leading movements in philanthropy, donor strategy models, and frameworks for issue-area selection and nonprofit vetting
  • Understanding of the unique role of philanthropy in accelerating solutions to the biggest issues facing American democracy
  • Demonstrates deep understanding of and a personal commitment to a representative and healthy democracy
  • Preference for California-based candidates, though candidates from anywhere in the U.S. will be considered.

Relationship Management and Philanthropic Advising

  • Work closely with the One for Democracy team to develop learning journeys, funding strategies, and in some cases multi-year giving plans for philanthropists across a variety of strategy areas
  • Organize funds toward portfolios of recommended organizations, with a focus on opportunities that are high-leverage, equity-oriented, and collaborative
  • Serve as a key point of contact for day-to-day donor questions and needs; including leading research on issues of interest, creating briefs and presentations, and recommending organizations to individuals in your portfolio
  • Add to One for Democracy’s in-house expertise on philanthropy best practices, legal structures, and emerging trends; with specific practice in collaborative and trust-based philanthropy
  • Proactively seize opportunities to connect with philanthropists in your portfolio on a range of opportunities including: opportunities to connect directly with field leaders, news connected to the donor’s interests, impact reports or data connected to the donor’s giving, and more
  • Work closely with the Chief of Staff, CEO, Chair of the Board of Directors, and other team members to design strategies to engage/activate philanthropists in your portfolio
  • Continuously sharpen your analysis by staying up to date on current events, research and data connected to the democracy sector, impact reports and plans developed by grantees, and more
  • Work with the operations team and Executive Aide to ensure donation acknowledgements are sent, including thank yous (the latter of which is owned by the Advisor)
  • Seize opportunities to put rapid response requests for funding in front of donors in your portfolio, if the request feels appropriate

Events and Administration

  • Work with the Chief of Staff, CEO, and our events team to lead education for our donors; develop and execute strategies for this, including regular convenings of families/individuals with similar interests
  • Manage invitations among assigned relationships for small and large gatherings on an ongoing basis
  • Maintain accurate data across all of One for Democracy’s systems–especially Salesforce–in a timely manner
  • Convey whether philanthropists in your portfolio are a good match to support One for Democracy’s operations, in addition to the support they move to the field

  • Remote organization, ability to work from anywhere in the U.S.
  • Flexible work hours
  • Monthly insurance reimbursement of $1000/mo for individuals or $2000/mo for families
  • Monthly phone and internet stipend of $150/mo
  • Equipment stipend of up to $2000
