Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.


Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.


The world leader in gifted education since 1979, Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the field through research, testing, programs, and other supports for K-12 advanced learners and their families. We aim to understand and inform how these students need to be nurtured to achieve their full potential as learners and global citizens.


CTY is accredited for grades K through 12 by the Middle States Association of College and Schools Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. CTY students hail from all neighborhoods and many nations, and our alumni include the cofounder of Google, the CEO of Facebook, and leaders in the sciences, arts, and government.


The Chief Development Officer will provide strategic leadership to advance the Development and Alumni Relations programs at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and in attracting and securing private funding to support CTY’s strategic initiatives and priorities.


This position, along with professional and administrative staff, will raise funds from a variety of sources, including parents, alumni, corporations, and foundations to support the strategic goals and mission of the organization.


  • This position is a dual report to the Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and the Johns Hopkins University Associate Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations.
  • Lead the evaluation, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of significant prospects and donors. Develop and execute effective strategies as required to obtain and maintain private sector funding support for CTY’s priorities, working closely with the Executive Director and other key university leadership.
  • Provide overall strategic leadership for CTY’s fundraising priorities including development operations, annual giving, major gifts, alumni relations, donor communications and publications, donor engagement and other activities.
  • Serve as a member of CTY’s Senior Directors Team and work closely with the Executive Director to develop private support and priorities for CTY.
  • Directly build and supervise the development and alumni relations team. Manage staff of professional fundraisers and support personnel in annual work plans and goal setting. Evaluate progress accordingly.
  • Manage and oversee all constituent engagement activities. Coordinate, as appropriate, with the University’s alumni relations program to develop and implement an outreach strategy to engage alumni and other constituents in supporting CTY.
  • Manage CTY’s campaign planning process and ensure the fiscal goals and priorities are achieved.
  • In concert with the Executive Director, establish future campaign priorities and budgets – both program-specific and collaborative efforts with other divisions of JHU.
  • Lead efforts to identify new prospects and develop the prospect pipeline, engaging academic leaders and key volunteers in the process.
  • Develop campaign themes and outreach and communication strategies.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing, create strategies for communications outreach to alumni, parents, constituents, and donors.
  • Manage the CTY’s Advisory Council. Serve as primary staff to the Council’s Nominating Committee (recruiting and onboarding new members).
  • Represent CTY on various university-wide external affairs committees. Sit on the Johns Hopkins University Development and Alumni Relations Management Team.
  • Operate with a high degree of fiscal responsibility. Work closely with the Senior Director of Finance and Business Affairs to prepare the department budget and to provide budget management and oversight of the development budget while providing financial forecasts and projections.
  • Engage in extensive travel, as needed, to cultivate donors and support CTY’s advisory council.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Seven years related professional level experience, including at least two years of management experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree.
  • Be able to understand and articulate academic values/goals, and work collaboratively with faculty, administration, students, alumni and volunteer leadership.
  • Be able to establish objectives, set performance standards and organize and motivate a staff team and its individual members to achieve fundraising and alumni relations goals.
  • Have a strong track record of successfully soliciting and managing major and principal gifts in a development setting.
  • Have demonstrated experience with campaign planning, fundraising, project management, events organization and execution.
  • Management, motivational, and programmatic consensus building skills with development professionals.
  • Ability to mentor and manage development professionals and administrative staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing advisory boards and volunteer leadership.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to use of information technology and the management and understanding of data systems.
  • Aptitude in business and financial acumen; ability to manage budgets and conduct financial analysis to include financial forecasts and projections.
