Executive Director, Alliance of Families for Justice
This is an opportunity for the right professional to lead a one-of-a-kind, New York-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The mission of the Alliance of Families for Justice (AFJ) is to support, empower, and mobilize families with incarcerated loved ones and people whose lives are impacted by incarceration so that they can marshal their collective power and bring about the social justice changes they want to see in the world.
The Executive Director must have at least five to seven years of relevant senior management experience. We are seeking someone with fundraising expertise in the nonprofit arena and a passion for driving creative initiatives. The ED must have a deep understanding of prison issues and policies, including how those issues affect impacted communities. As the chief advocate and spokesperson, the Executive Director will capitalize on AFJ’s unique platform of service and advocacy and seek to expand both the organization’s constituency and financial support base. An essential task is to strengthen current and create new relationships with key players in the field. The goal of the new ED will be to take the organization to the next level, following the founder’s retirement. This is a full-time, largely in-person position, where an undergraduate degree and a relevant law/graduate degree is preferred. The Executive Director will report to and work closely with AFJ’s 10-member governing Board of Directors.
Established in 2016, the Alliance of Families for Justice uses a four-prong support approach to carry out its mission: Legal, Family, Organizing/Advocacy, and Youth Empowerment.
AFJ offers legal support, which addresses the rights, concerns, and quality of life of incarcerated people related to medical, mental health, physical abuse, parole, and clemency matters, among other areas of support.
Through its Family Support Unit, AFJ provides Healing Circles and Retreats. The Circles provide support where families learn about developing daily living skills, positive relationships, and how best to cultivate resources. In addition to family counseling, individual counseling is offered as well.
AFJ’s Organizing and Advocacy Unit trains family members, formerly incarcerated people, and volunteers to mobilize and take on issues impacting the community.
AFJ’s Youth Empowerment Project is an educational initiative that equips young community leaders to tackle the challenges inherent in protecting their communities from the upward trend of mass incarceration and forms of oppression.
AFJ has a yearly budget of approximately $2 million. The Executive Director will supervise and manage a staff of 11 full-time and five part-time employees, which includes seven senior staff members and an executive assistant. Limited travel is required to fulfill the job responsibilities.
AFJ seeks a diverse pool of candidates and will offer a competitive salary range between $150,000 to $180,000 with a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Formerly incarcerated persons and/or justice-impacted persons are strongly encouraged to apply. We also welcome nominations of potential candidates.
