Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking an innovative equity-minded, leader to serve as the Executive Director, of College Advancement within the Executive Wing as part of the Office of the President.

 

OCC is a recognized leader in preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions and holds the prestigious designations of both a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI). The college also boasts state-of-the-art facilities and is the first community college in Southern California to offer on-campus residential housing with over 300 apartment units, further enhancing the student experience.

Plans, organizes, controls, and directs the activities of the College Foundation includes

implementing capital development and fund-raising programs, accumulation of charitable and philanthropic contributions, and related fundraising and community support services.

 

Distinguishing Career Features

The Executive Director of College Advancement is a management position that includes

significant freedom to act and latitude in developing and carrying out programs for fundraising, community and donor cultivation, campaign development, and event planning. Advancement to this position is through promotion and requires compliance with the stated qualifications.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions, and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following kinds of duties, as assigned:

• Designs and implements comprehensive development programs, including annual fund, corporate, and foundation relations, gift planning, endowment and capital campaigns, nonpublic grant writing, and alumni and constituent efforts.

• Provides participatory support to the President, Foundation Board, and senior administration with regards to donor cultivation and resource development.

• Prepares and implements general revenue development strategies and action plans by overseeing functions of specialized programs within the campus community.  Provides expertise and support for community-based entities.

• Plans, organizes, and performs a variety of activities to support campaign development. Organizes and applies resources, volunteers, Board members, and other methods to accomplish fundraising goals.

• Cultivates contacts and establishes and maintains a system for identifying and contacting current and potential donors and for soliciting support for foundation programs.

• Prepares communications and other forms of recognition to acknowledge donors.

• Develops deferred and planned giving programs. Establishes the Foundation as a recognized source for estate planning.

• Coordinates and directs the fund-raising activities for scholarship programs. Works with other College offices to develop foundation-related grant programs.

• Develops and cultivates community and business relationships for ongoing in-kind gifts. Develops partnerships with community organizations, philanthropic groups, affiliates, and business organizations.

• Oversees and participates in the development of marketing and promotional materials that support the College’s advancement and fund-raising activities.

• Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

• Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

 

Administrative and Financial Management

Engages in near-to-long-term planning with the Foundation Board and College President. Participates in and may facilitate the development of programs, campaigns, and priorities for the Foundation and Board.

• Develops and implements activities that publicize the work of the foundation. Prepares copy for printed materials and other media use for outreach.

• Participates in community activities and service organizations, representing the College and foundation, and advising on fundraising strategies.

• Develops and administers systems and procedures for tracking campaign contributions and all other forms of giving and makes the appropriate allocation of funding per donor stipulations.

• Provides regular updates to the investment and executive committees on financial standing, portfolio levels, and donor activity.

• Oversees budget development and financial record keeping for the foundation. Ensures proper accounting controls, consistent with College and foundation policy. Prepares an annual report for distribution to the Board, donors, and the general public.

• Supervises, establishes work plans and objectives, and evaluates performance of staff.

 

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Knowledge and Skills

• The position requires specialized professional knowledge of and experience with foundation leadership, donor cultivation, campaign development, fundraising, major gift solicitation, planned giving, and event planning.

• Requires working knowledge of foundation governing board mission, objectives, role, and proceedings within a public non-profit environment.

• Requires well-developed human relations skills to make formal presentations to diverse audiences, persuade others to make personal commitments, initiate contact with individuals and organizations at a high level, and convey a positive image of the College.

• Requires well-developed English language skills to prepare professional and persuasive materials and reports.

• Requires sufficient math skills to perform a variety of business and financial calculations.

 

Abilities

Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.

• Requires the ability, initiative, and creativity to promote non-profit advancement programs and develop action plans to reach fundraising and service goals.

• Requires the ability to deliver effective oral and written presentations.

• Requires the ability to work cooperatively and productively with groups and individuals of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

Education and Experience and demonstrated evidence of D.E.I.A. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility)

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in marketing communications, journalism, business, or a related field and 8 years of progressive experience in a responsible fundraising and marketing role.

Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

A master’s degree is preferred and may substitute for some experience

Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

Valid licensure related to the position; such as Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certification or Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CPG).

Experience working in higher education and/or a non-profit/public agency.

 

Licenses and Certificates

Requires a valid driver's license.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors, and minimal safety considerations exist.

(ON-CAMPUS - in-person position)

This is a permanent contract, full-time, general-funded, 12-months  per year, Classified Management position. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flexible schedules and weekends are necessary to address the needs of programs and job duties.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.  The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.   (Salary Schedule:  DG-11)

Pay Philosophy:
