Director of Development (*Restricted)
General Description:
The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director of the NOVA Foundation and is responsible for building solid and sustainable philanthropic support for the NOVA Foundation. The Director establishes the strategic fundraising vision and subsequently leads and implements all philanthropic functions.
Duties and Tasks:
- Responsible for the development, administration, and management of the annual fund, planned giving program, events, corporate and foundation partnerships, and fundraising campaigns.
- Oversees and motivates members of the Foundation Board and external volunteers in fulfilling their fundraising roles.
- Responsible for regular engagement and stewardship of individual donors to ensure donor retention and increased giving.
- Initiates and manages robust collaborations with key college departments like Information and Engineering Technologies (IET), the Medical Education Campus, and NOVA Workforce.
- Supervises two members of the Foundation team.
- Other duties as assigned.
*This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.
KSAs:
- Ability to guide conversations using data.
- Ability to write persuasively, clearly, and concisely to blend information from multiple sources into a single, effective fundraising proposal that meets the needs of the prospect.
- Demonstrated ability to close gifts.
- Demonstrated success across fundraising strategies, including annual and major giving, corporate and foundation relationships, volunteer engagement, creative special events, comprehensive and/or capital campaigns and effective use of data and reporting mechanisms.
- Extensive knowledge of best practice fundraising principles, including the techniques and practices for garnering individual and institutional support.
- Excellent skills in office suite software, including word processing, spreadsheet and communication applications; includes advance knowledge of media communication platforms.
- Knowledge of national, regional, and local philanthropic sources.
- Strong communication and public presentation skills.
- Understanding of data and how to articulate metrics in laymen’s terms.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Board members to close gifts.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience cultivating leadership and major gifts, including support of donor strategies, solicitation approaches, and donor stewardship.
- Experience in the development and implementation of budgets, budget management, and grant development.
- Professional experience in development and fundraising for non-profit organizations.
- Project management experience.
Additional Considerations:
- Basic end-user level experience with donor database like DonorPerfect.
- Capital campaign experience.
- Experience working independently and as a team lead in a results-oriented environment and demonstrating flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities.
