Major Gifts Officer (*Restricted)

General Description:
This position will be a key member of the NOVA Educational Foundation team and assists the Executive Director and Development Director in developing and implementing a strategic fundraising plan of action and evaluation for maintaining a robust donor pipeline. Specifically, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts prospects including corporate and foundation leaders, key alumni, and friends of the College in support of NOVA’s fundraising priorities and programmatic initiatives.

Duties and Tasks:

  • Help donors accomplish their philanthropic goals through relationships with Northern Virginia Community College.
  • Support the development and implementation of innovative fundraising strategies to expand funding for the College’s key strategic priorities.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of 100+ individual and corporate donors with giving capacities of $25,000+ and cultivate new relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Monitor progress toward fundraising goals and movement of prospects, annually, through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Establish and/or expand corporate and foundation partnerships.
  • Plan and coordinate stewardship events recognizing donors.
  • Maintain and provide regular/accurate reports of annual, leadership, and major gift activities.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of NOVA’s programs, strategic priorities, and its administrative and financial organization.
  • The position will build relationships with individual and corporate donors and establish a continuum between annual and major donors.
  • Produces quarterly and annual reports on giving and donor engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

*This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.

KSAs:

  • Ability to articulate a persuasive case for support, develop appropriate cultivation strategies, and solicit donors in a timely fashion is essential.
  • Ability to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects. Must be able to maintain and grow current relationships while developing new donors to move into the prospect pipeline. Must be able to utilize emotional intelligence to read situations and act appropriately.
  • Able to conduct face-to-face donor meetings and engage with prospects using grace, manners, and common sense.
  • Comfortable with donor database technology to track contacts with constituents.
  • Demonstrates desire to stay current on industry practices and maintain continued professional growth.
  • Effective communicator creating and imparting clear information; anticipates needs of others; ability to concisely convey oral and written thoughts; possesses strong presentation skills; effectively manages conflict; uses tact when dealing with demanding and sensitive individuals.
  • Knowledge of current fundraising practices, especially as they pertain to complex higher education settings.
  • Proactive in evaluating and solving problems; effectively organizes work and projects to meet objectives and tight deadlines; encourages teamwork and cooperation; ability to cultivate strong relationships with leadership, donors, alumni, and colleagues.
  • Strong commitment to ethics, willingness to embrace a diverse and inclusive workplace; self-motivated, nimble, and able to adapt to changing environments.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with co-workers and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent customer service skills to include the ability to effectively follow up and follow through.
  • Detail-oriented with strong Internet research skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and successfully meet deadlines and manage multiple projects.
  • Proven ability to create, foster and grow donor/client relationships.
  • Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising, including annual and major gifts
  • Ability to serve as a strong, outward facing representative of the NOVA Foundation translating the mission, vision, and values of the institution to various internal and external constituencies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in fundraising preferably in higher education or non-profit administration, sales, or comparable experience
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience working on projects.
  • Experience in the use of digital and social media to enhance messaging, build connection and create donor affinity for institutional goals and priorities.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience in advancement, data management, stewardship programs and constituent research programs
  • Experience in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with Donor Perfect or similar donor management software.
