Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.
Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.
Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) staff support the mission of building enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for the institution –raising more than $600 million annually from individuals, foundations, and corporations for the university and health system. Our work supports its focus on research, teaching, and patient care, and its role as a Higher Education leader on the global stage. The Talent Management and Human Resources (TMHR) team within DAR embraces and advances the university's HR mission of attracting, developing, retaining, and engaging a high-performing workforce in support of excellence in the university's mission, while promoting diversity, equity, civility, and respect.
This role, reporting to the DAR Director of Learning, Change Management and Organization Development is responsible for significant instructional design and operational leadership of the Learning and Development function for Development and Alumni Relations. You will bring to life the vision and strategy designed to build skills, engagement and career advancement for all DAR staff in service of the broader Talent Strategy.
Key responsibilities:
Programmatic Instructional Design, Delivery and Facilitation: 55%
- Serve as the TMHR lead for the Training Advisory Group, providing strategic direction that enables them to translate senior leadership business and organizational priorities into concrete learning pathways for staff at all levels in DAR.
- Independently scope, design and deliver a range of personal effectiveness and advancement specific skill building courses for audiences from new to work through to seasoned Executive Team/Senior Leaders. Ensure these align with Central HR priorities as well as DAR’s.
- Provide instructional design and facilitation expertise to subject matter experts in specialist roles including Development Research, Gift Planning, and Development Communications as well as Campaign Engagement and Operations.
- Lead the planning and execution of DAR Talent Conference, one of our signature talent initiatives that provides programming for all 550 DAR Staff
- Lead the DAR Mentoring Program.
- Define the learning metrics and analytics to measure the effectiveness of learning solutions and make recommendations for continuous improvement of training offerings.
- Strengthen relationships with other training teams across the University and Medicine to identify emerging best practice and share reusable learnings from DAR.
Learning Program Management and Marketing: 25%
- Build out comprehensive schedule for DAR training that aligns with DAR vision and workforce strategies. Mentor the Human Resources Coordinator to implement all training activities via the learning management system and DAR specific marketing channels.
- Design and distribute upcoming events through the biweekly Learning Links.
- Lead the creation of DAR Training Catalog at least twice a year and supervise the maintenance of DAR Training Calendar in Outlook and on Galaxy.
- Identify ways to strengthen the current training marketing noted above (Learning Links, Training Catalog).
- Lead the collaboration with other staff committees (DRIVE, RISE, ERGs) to support their training and engagement activities and create a coherent employee experience.
Onboarding Program Design and Delivery: 20%
- Lead the monthly New Employee Onboarding sessions and quarterly VP Welcome sessions for all new DAR staff.
- Design the next generation of DAR’s onboarding experience for external new hires, internal hires and Partner Hospital colleagues to DAR to drives their sense of belonging as well as their ability to do their jobs. This will include technology enabled solutions (e.g. DAR Onboarding Platform), synchronous in person and virtual sessions, as well as asynchronous materials.
- Strengthen DAR managers’ ability to onboard their new hires effectively by providing reusable best practices and clear, consistent guidance on what is expected by them vs TMHR.
- Build a network across Johns Hopkins and with other organizations to seek and reapply emerging best practices that are relevant to our audience and context.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Five years of experience
- Additional education and experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- At least 7 years of related experience preferred, including at least some experience leading a learning program and managing a project team in a medium to a large organization.
- Professional certification (s) such as Certified Professional in Learning or Performance (CPLP), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), or Human Capital Strategist (HCS).
- Desired foundational competencies include the following: business acumen, relationship building, interpersonal skills, technology literacy, managing others, influence, collaboration, communication, innovation, prioritization, analytical skills, and systems thinking.
