Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Development Associate, Individual Philanthropy at our Development department.
The Development Associate, Individual Philanthropy will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
HCZ’s Development Department is seeking a committed Development Associate, Individual Philanthropy to support the robust fundraising of our dynamic team. In this full-time position, the successful individual will play a key role in supporting the Individual Philanthropy team. The ideal candidate will have strong project management skills and will provide strategic and administrative support for the Individual Philanthropy team and will assist with the execution and management of donor communications to achieve fundraising goals.
The successful candidate will balance an independent initiative with effective collaboration across Development and the organization. This position is ideal for early career growth in philanthropy. The successful candidate will have an outgoing personality, a sense of humor, pro-active ambition, and a passion for contributing to the mission of a pre-eminent minority-led organization in the anti-poverty, education, and social services space. The position reports to the Director of Individual Philanthropy and will be a valued member of a supportive team driven by an ethos of collaboration, continuous learning, professional development, and improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide support to IP Director with calendar management, coordinating meetings, preparing briefings, site visits, and donor reports.
- Project manage IP team’s dashboards, JDs, and revenue report preparation.
- Assist with creating lists/queries, data entry, and cleanup in the CRM database.
- Assist IP team with database integrity by confirming donor information, entering donor communications and next steps, removal of duplicate data, list clean ups and maintaining updated information for constituents.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Support front-line efforts with assisting with the project management of donor communications such as CYE & FYE campaigns, direct solicitations, stewardship, and pipeline strategies.
- Assist with the timely execution of the annual impact report.
- Provide support with writing, maintaining, and regularly updating development materials, including HCZ overview narratives and presentations, program overviews, appeals, acknowledgement letters, donor facing web content, and CEO and Executive updates.
- Assist with drafting donor print and digital donor communications i.e. thank you notes, holiday cards, and serving as backup to IP Director on follow-up needed for donors.
Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- 2-3 years of related professional experience preferred, including internships; graduating college seniors and recent college graduates are encouraged to apply
- Advanced interpersonal communication skills with keen attention to detail
- Excellent time management skills and ability to handle multiple projects and competing deadlines
- Strong writing skills
- Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook)
- Experience working with project management programs (e.g. Monday.com or Basecamp) is a plus
- Experience with Raiser’s Edge or equivalent software is a plus

We offer competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including fully employer-covered health benefits. This is a hybrid role with three days per week in our Central Harlem offices.
